UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY TORRENS, OF BRlDGNORTI-I, ENGLAND.
.e Love.
SPECIFICATION forming1 part of Letters Patent N o'. 720,640, dated February 17, 1903.
Application filed March 27, 1902. Serial No. 100,324. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, MARY TORRENS, a sub-- ject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Claverley, Bridgnorth, in the county of Salop,
act description of the invention, such as will` enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- Io pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to gloves for protecting the hands while performing domestic and other operations, and has for its object certain improvements whereby great freedom ofmovement for the hands is permitted while' wearing the gloves Without lessening the waterproof or protective qualities thereof, a
strongr non-slipping grip of the articles under treatment is rendered possible, vand the zo usefulness of the gloves is in other ways increased.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated a preferred construction of my glove according to my invention.
According to my invention I form the gloves with arm extensions A, so that when in use they will protect the wrists and a portion of the` arms, and I do away with the usual fastening devices and instead close the 3o gloves entirely, except at the end where the" hand is inserted-that is, at the end remote from the linger portions-at which part I pro- Vide an elastic band B, which will cause the gloves to t tightly upon the arm, while per- 3 5 mitting sufficient extension to allow of the insertion of the hand. Thus it will be seen that the hand, wrist, and a portion of the arm will largely prevent any liquid passing to the inside of the glove. Any other appropropriate fastening device, however, may be employed at this end or there may be no fastening at all.
The gloves are of waterproof or other protective materials of a llexible nature and are suitably lined, so that great freedom of movement of the hands in wearing the gloves is permitted, and it isY therefore possible to obtain a stronggrip of articles under treatment without risk of dropping them owing to an imperfect and awkward grip of them, as happens now without the use of this invention.
To further obtain a non-slipping grip upon the articles, I prefer that a waterproof or pro tective material having a roughened surface or having gripping-strips C of appropriate material be affixed to the surface, so as to provide the necessary roughness.
In many domestic operations it becomes necessary at times to employ a stronger and rougher article than the usual dish-clout to remove impurities, and to provide forsuch an article being handy and ready for use when required I apply a piece of felt or other material D with hooks or eyes E or other fastening devices, and I provide the gloves with vthe corresponding portions of said fastening devices, so that the piece of material can be secured upon the glove in any suitable position, such as the back or side, when required for rougher use.
I claim- An elastic waterproof glove having the fingers and thumb provided with reinforced roughened. VstripsV of material, and an interchangeable piece of material provided with fastenings detachably connected to the back of the glove, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof ,I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. Y
' MARY TORRENS. Witnesses: v V- j MARTIN ALDERwIcK, HAROLD V. PEDLEY.
