To all whom it may concern.-

Be itknown that LAMOSBURSON, a resident of Reissing, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Holders for Envelops, Papers, 850.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to holders or clips for envelops, papers, 850., and has for one of its objects to provide a cheap and simple device for securely and compactly inclosing a package of envelops or other papers, as well as one which can be easily and quickly attached to and detached from the envelops or papers.

Another object of my invention is to provide such a device which will hold a large or small amount of envelops or papers, as well as envelops and papers of different lengths, together; and a still further object is to provide such a device as will give sufficient resiliency so as to enable the same to expand or retract in holding different widths of envelope or papers together.

My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use the device, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder or clip applied to a bunch or package of envelops or papers. Fig. 2 is an enlarged face view of the holder or clip detached from the package and showing in dotted lines the same expanded for larger bunches or packages, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of a portion of the holder.

Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawings.

As illustrated in the drawings, A represents the bunch or package of envelope or papers, and 1 is the holder or clip, which is formed of wire and is composed of the members 2 and member 3. The members 2 are each bent to shape from a single piece of wire and are each provided with the side portions 4, which cross each other, as at 4, and are provided with the intermediate inwardly-projecting spring portions 5, terminating in the loops 6. Both of the members 2 have the side portions 4- turned at right angles to form the end portions 8, and both of the members 2 have their end portions projected inwardly, as at 9, from the portions S, said portions 9 being provided at their terminations with the loops or eyes 10 for connecting them to the member 3, as hereinafter described. The member 3 is formed of the link 11, which is bent to form two parallel side bars or portions 12 and curved end portions 13, having the opening 14 between them, and to one of these side portions 12 the eyes 10 on one of the members 2 and to the other one of these side portions 12 the eyes 10 on the other member 2 are connected. The loops or eyes 10 on the members 2 are so arranged upon the bars 12 of the links 11 as to cross or overlap each other, as at 10 in Fig. 3, so that when moved along the bars 12 through the opening 14 of said link 11 both the eyes 10 on each side of the link-will move together or in unison. A

sleeve 15 fits around the central portion of the link 11 between the eyes 10 on the members 2 and is connected to the side portions 12 for holding and strengthening the member 3.

The use and operation of my improved holder or clip for envelops, papers, &c., are as follows: One of the intermediate inwardlyprojecting spring port-ions 5 on the side portion t of one member 2 is placed over the side of the package or bunch of envelops, papers, &c. when the opposite inwardly-projecting spring portion 5 on the side portion 4: of the other member 2 can be pulled over and sprung against the other side of the bunch or I package of envelops, papers, &zc., adjacent to and opposite the first projecting spring portion 5 put in place. When the holder 1 is in position and applied around the bunch A as described, the flexibility of the wire and its elasticity will cause considerable pressure to be exerted on the opposite sides of the bunch by the inwardly-projecting portions 9 of the members 2 on the one side of the bunch and the intervening projecting portions 5 and loops 6 thereon on the members 2 on the opposite side of the bunch, while the link 11, connecting the eyes 10 on the members 2, will also act to exert considerable springpressure upon that side of the bunch when forced against the bundle by the spring-pressure of the other parts.

When it is desired to open the holder 1 for removal from the bunch A, one of the pro- Ifl'jecting spring portions 5 on one of the memhere 2 can be raised and pulled over the edge of the bunch, and in this position the holder 1 can be removed by retaining the hold on said member 2 and pulling or pushing backward toward the other member 2, which will release the other spring portion 5 from the bunch. After one of the spring portions 5 is thus removed from the bunch A and it is desired to add to the bunch such envelops or papers to be added can be placed between the other parts of the bunch or under the spring portion 5 in place and the removed spring portion 5 sprung back to place, and when it is desired to withdraw from the bunch A the one spring portion 5 can be opened and the envelops or papers withdrawn from the bunch or under the other spring portion 5 in place and the removed spring portion 5 sprung back to position.

By reason of the side portions 4 of the members 2 crossing each other at 4: such side portions are not liable to spread apart, and such crossing adds greatly to the strength and durability of the holder, as well as preventing the locking together or entanglement of the holder when a nu mberare placed together, while at the same time the crossed portions enable the holder to retain its shape and permit the use of small or light wire, thereby cheapening the cost of producing and machinery employed in the construction of the holder.

By reason of the members 2 being connected to the slotted member 3 by the eyes 10 such members 2 are allowed to act as springs around the bunch or package A, so that the members 2 of the holder will adjust and accommodate themselves to different widths of bunches by sliding along the member 3 and bring a straight and even pressure to bear upon the edge of the bunch, as well as a strong pressure on the face and back of the same, thereby doing away with the use of different-size holders.

It will be seen that by the end portions of the members being projected inwardly the holder will clasp the package or bunch whether it is short or long, and the slotted link between and connected to such ends prevents them from springing out and allows the holder to adjust itself to any width or style of hunch or package, as well as preventing the package or bunch from bending and also retaining short papers or envelops within the package or bunch.

The device is cheap and simple in its construction and operation, is not liable to break or get out of order, and afiords an easy, rapid, and convenient means for the objects and purposes in view.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A holder for envelops, papers, &c., consisting of a wire formed of parallel side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, and the separate portions of each of said side members crossing each other in forming the looped spring portions, parallel endmembers joining the side members and provided with inwardly-projecting portions thereon for hearing against the opposite side of the package, and means connecting the ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end memhere.

2. A holder for envelops, papers, 850., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, and the separate portions of each of said side members crossing each other in forming the looped spring portions, end members joining the side members and composed of right-angle portions and inwardlyprojecting portions for hearing against the opposite side of the package, and means connecting the ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members.

3. A holder for envelops, papers, &c., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, and the separate portions of each of said side members crossing each other in forming the looped spring portions, end members joining the side members having inwardly-projecting portions thereon forbearing against the opposite side of the package and provided with loops or eyes at their ends, and means connecting the loop ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members.

4:. A holder for envelops, papers, 850., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, and the separate portions of each of said side members crossing each other in forming the looped spring portions, end members joining the side members and composed of right-angle portions and inwardlyprojecting portions for hearing against the 'opposite side of the package, said inwardlyprojecting portions being provided with loops or eyes at their ends, and means connecting the loop ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members.

5. A holder for envelops, papers, 850., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, parallel end members joining the side members and provided with inwardly-projecting portions thereon forbearing against the opposite'side of the package, and sliding means connecting the ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members.

6. A holder for envelops, papers, 650., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against' one side of the package, end membersjoining the side members having inwardlyprojecting portions thereon for bearing against the other side of the package and provided with loops or eyes at their ends, and sliding means connecting the loop ends' of the said inwardlyprojecting portions on the end members.

7. A holder for envelops, papers, &c., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, end members joining the side members and composed of right-angle portions and inwardly-projecting portions for hearing against the opposite side of the package, and sliding means connecting the ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members.

8. A holder for envelops, papers, &c., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, end members joining the side members and composed of right-angle portions and inwardly-projecting portions for' bearing against the opposite side of the package and provided with loops or eyes at their ends, and sliding means connecting the loop ends of said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members.

9. A holder for envelops, papers, 850., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, parallel end members joining the side members and provided with inwardly projecting portions thereon for bearing against the opposite side of the package, and a slotted link connecting the ends of the said inwardly-projectingportions on the end members.

10. A holder for envelops, papers, &c., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, end members joining the side members having inwardly-projecting portions thereon for bearing against the other side of the package and provided with loops or eyes at their ends, and a slotted link connecting the loop ends of the said inwardlyprojecting portions on the end members.

11. A holder for envelops, papers, &c., consisting of a Wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, end members joining the side members and composed of right-angle portions and inwardlyprojecting portions for bearing against the opposite side of the pack- I age, and a slotted link connecting the ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members.

12. A holder for envelops, papers, &c., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, end members joining the side members and composed of right-angle portions and inwardly-projecting portions for bearing against the opposite side of the package, said inwardly-projecting portions being provided with loops or eyes at their ends, and a slotted link connecting the loop ends of said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members.

13. A holder for envelops, papers, 850., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portion's thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, parallel end members joining the side members and provided with inwardly-projecting portions thereon for bearing against the opposite side of the package, a slotted link' connecting the ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members, and a sleeve secured around said link between the ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members.

14. A holder for envelops, papers, &c. consisting of a Wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, end members joining the side members having inwardly-projecting portions thereon for hearing against the other side of the package and provided with loops or eyes at their ends, a slotted link connecting the loop ends of the said inwardlyprojecting portions on the end members, and a sleeve secured around said link between the loop ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members.

15. A holder for envelops, papers, &c., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, end members joining the side members and composed of right-angle portions and inwardlyproject-ing portions for bearing against the opposite side of the package, a slotted link connecting the ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members, and a sleeve secured around-said link between the ends of the said inwardlyprojecting portions on the end members.

16. A holder for envelops, papers, 850., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side ICO I of the package, end members joining the side members and composed of right-angle portions and inwardly-projecting portions for bearing against the opposite side of the package, said inwardly-projecting portions being provided with loops or eyes at their ends, a slotted link connecting the loop ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members, and a sleeve secured around said link between the loop ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members.

17. A holder for envelops, papers, &c., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly-projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, end members joining the side members having inwardly-projectingportions thereon for bearing against the other side of the package and provided with loops or eyes at their ends, and a slotted link connecting the loop ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members, said loop ends or eyes overlapping each other on said slotted link.

18. A holder for envelops, papers, &c., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardly projecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, end members joining the side members and composed of right-angle portions and inwardlyprojecting portions for hearing against the opposite side of the package, said inwardly-projecting portions being provided with loops or eyes at their ends, and a slotted link connecting the loop ends of said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members, said loop ends or eyes overlapping each other on said slotted link.

19. A holder for envelops, papers, 850. consistingof a wire formed of side members having inwardlyprojecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, end members joining the side members having inwardly-projectin g portions thereon for hearing against the other side of the package and provided with loops or eyes at their ends, a slotted link connecting the loop ends of said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members, said loop ends or eyes overlapping each other on said slotted link, and a sleeve secured around said link between the loop ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members.

20. A holder for envelops, papers, 850., consisting of a wire formed of side members having inwardlyprojecting looped spring portions thereon adapted to bear against one side of the package, end members joining the side members and composed of right-angle portions and inwardlyprojecting portions for hearing against the opposite side of the package, said inwardly-projecting portions being provided with loops or eyes at their ends, a slotted link connecting the loop ends of said inwardly-projecting portions on the end members, said loop ends or eyes overlapping each otheron saidslottedliuk, and a sleeve secured around said link between the loop ends of the said inwardly-projecting portions on said end members.
