CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. a0. 1916.
Patented Dec.19,19l6.
INVENTOR .ATTORNE VS JANI Kn'rsEn, 1 or THE rinses, atn'rrananniws;
, CLAMP.
Specification of LettersPatentl Application filed March 30, 1918'. Serial no; 87,786.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAN Knisnn, of The Hague, Netherlands, have invented certain new-and "useful Improved Clamp; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inkthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beingdiad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The clamp for attaching cloth, ribbon, cord and the like described in Patent No. 1,183,819, granted to me May 16, 1916, c0nsists essentially of a bar or pole provided with a rib or cam projecting into a slot of the supporting member, this rib gripping the fabric as it comes into engagement with one or the other walls or sides of the slot when the fabric is tightened by a pull on one of its ends.
The herein described invention relates to an improvement of this device by which the gripping force is increased, this being desirable when very smooth fabrics have to be attached while, moreover, the free end of the fabric may be easily made invisible. Another advantage is that the fabric can more easily be fastened so that its borders are at right angles with the bar. The figure represents a cross section ofthe device. For this purpose the rib Z is split and the clamping bar a made hollow as shown by the drawing; the latter also indicates how the free end 0 of the fabric is cased in the inside of the bar. It will be clear that when at introducing the fabric the border 03 (forming right angles with the lateral borders) is applied over its total length against the inner surface of the hollow bar the fabric 9 will project at right angles from the supporting member e. The gripping force is increased because the free end is gripped at f between both parts of the rib, these partsbeing pressed against each other by the circumferential tension of the fabric.
Claims:
1. A gripping device of the character described, comprising a slotted support and a clamping rod having a split projecting element extending into said slot, said rod, in operating position, having passed between the jaws of its split projecting element,.one end of the material engaged and said rod lying within a bight ofsaid material entered through tlie-slct inthe siipport, whereby under strainon the material beyond-the support, said material is gripped not only between the projecting element of the rod and one side of the slot in the support but also between the jaws of the projecting element of the rod, substantially as described.
2. A grippingdeviceof the character described.v comprising a slotted support and a cylindrical clampingrod having a split fin extending into said slot, said rod, in operating position, having passed between the jaws of its split fin, one end of the material en gaged and said rod lying within a bight of said material entered through the slot in the support, whereby under strain on the material beyond the support, said material is gripped not only between the projecting element of the rod and one side of the slot in the support but also between the jaws of the projecting element of the rod, substantially as described.
3. A gripping device of the characterdescribed, comprising a cylindrical support longitudinally slotted in combination with a cylindrical clamping rod of less diameter lying within said support and having a split fin projecting into the slot of the support, said rod, in operating position, having passed between the jaws of its split fin, one end of the material engaged and said rod lying within a bight of said material entered through the slot in the support, whereby under strain on the material beyond the support, said material is gripped not only between the projecting element of the rod and one side of the slot in the support but also between the jaws of the projecting element of the rod, substantially as described.
4. A. gripping device of the character described, comprising a supporting member having a slot, in combination with a clamping bar carried by said supporting member and having a split fin projecting into said. slot, for the purpose described.
5. A gripping device ofthe character deratenteanee. raters.
scribed, comprising a supporting member comprising a supporting member having a slot and an interior recess of greater diame ter than the slot, in combination with a clamping bar lying, in assembled position, Within said recess and having a split fin adapted to project into said slot, for the purpose described.
7. A clamp of the character described, comprising a supporting member having a slot and an interior recess of greater diameter than the slot, in combination with a hollow clamping bar lying, in assembled position, within said recess and having a split fin the slot in Which communicates With the interior of said clamping bar.
8. A clamp of the character described, comprising a supporting member having a slot and an interior recess of greater diameter than the slot, in combination With a clamping bar lying, in assembled position,
Within said recess and having a split fin adapted to project into said slot, said bar lying Within a bight in the material engaged, which is passed through the slot in the support and its end inserted in said split fin so that upon straining the length of the fabric beyond the clamp, not only is the material in the bight engaged between the fin and one side of the slot in the support but the fabric end inserted in the split fin is subjected to pressure between the adjacent Walls of the latter, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
