Description
@einen faire getint @Hirn JOSIAH Jf.' MAOKEY, OF SOUTH BROOKLYN, NEW YORK. Leners Pafenflvo. 71,772, lated liecember 3, 1867.
IMPRQVBD SPRING ron lpoorts.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I, J'SIAH J. MACKEY, of South Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and Stato of New York, have invented a new and improved lDoor-Srpring; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full zindexact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my saidimprovements, hy which my invention may he distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to Ame by Letters Patent.
This invention relates to a new and improved application of a spring to doors, for the purpose of preventing the slamming of the same as they close. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figureil is a side view of my invention.
Figure 2, a plan or top view of' the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents a spring,`wh ieh is formed by splitting a bar of steel, B; or said har may be of iron or steel, forged or made separately, with the spring welded toit. The outer end of the bar B is curved or bentground, as shown at a in fig. 2; and the inner end o f said bar is forged with a cross-plate, b, which is eat in" the jamh, c, of the door-frame, and secured thereto by screws, ol, the cuter surface of the cross-plate beingusl1 with the outer surfaceof the jamh c, so as to admit of the door, e, closing against the shoulder-piece, f, ofthe jamb, as will be understood by referring to iig. 2.
The spring A projects out from the bar B within the path of the movement of the door e, so that the door in closing willstrike the spring and force it towards the bar B, the resistance of the springheing suiiicient to overcome the velocity of the door'before it comes in 'contact with the shoulder-piece f, and prevent the former from slamming.
This spring may be applied'to the jamh of thel door-frame, or to the top.crosspiece of-the frame, and even to the side piece, if desired. In general, however thc jamh o f the door-frame will bo themost convenient place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent- The spring constructed as described, consisting ofthe parts, A B, secured to thc door-frame, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
