Description

l @eine tatee atent @fitte JOHN DECKER, OF SPARTA, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELE AND CHARLES W. WARDWELL, OE BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
i Letters Patent lVo. 62,532, dated March 5, 1867; antcrlated February 20, 1867.
IMPROVED DOOR-PASTENING.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN DECKER, of Sparta, in'the county of Sussex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Door-Fastening; and I do-hcreoy declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan ortop View of my invention applied to a door, the latter with one side of the door-frame being shown in section.4 l
Figure 2, a reduced perspective view of my invention applied to a door.
Similar letters oi' reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved portable door-fastening, such as are designed for travellers to fasten or secure the door of a bed-chamber on retiring. The object of the invention is to obtain a fastening forvthe purpose specified which will be simple in construction, capable of being readily applied, and one which will eiiectually secure the door and Without marrng it or the door-frame.
A represents a straight rod having two spurs, a a', projecting from it at right angles and from opposite sides, one spur, a, being at the extreme en`d of the rod A, and designed to penetrate the edge of the door, and the other spur, a', designed to penetrate the side of the door-frame. (See iig. l.) The rod A, at some distance beyond the face or side, has a semicircular continuation, B, and then a straight continuation, O, parallel with A, and a continuation, D, at right angles with A and C, the continuation D joining .A and bearing against the inner side of the door-frame, as shown clearly in tig. l. The portion A ofthe device must be suiiciently small in diameter to admit of fitting between the edge of the door and the side of the doonframe, and said portion may be shoved in between said parts with the spurs a a in a vertical position, and the device then turned so that the spurs may penetrate the edge of the door and the side of the frame. By this means it will be seen that the door will be securely fastened, the portion D forming a rm bearing for the device against the side of the door-frame, and the portions B C D serving as a handle to turn the device between the door and door-frame to cause the spurs to penetrate the latter. The device may he constructed at a very moderate cost, of either malleable cast iron or steel, and may be carried in the pocket without any inconvenience whatever.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'.lhe door-fastener herein described, the same consisting of the rod A, spurs a a', semicircular continuation B, continuations O'and D, constructed and operating substantially as described for the purpose specified.
JOHN DECKER.
