UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ARN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 713,374, dated November 11, 1902.
Application filed August 8, 1901.
T0 a/ZZ whom may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ARN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oolumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bedsteads, and pertains to a fastening means between the head and foot and the horizontal mattress or spring frame.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a bedstead with my 'in- Vention applied thereto. Fig. 2is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view through the mattress or spring frame at the point of attachment of the head thereto. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the frame at the point of attachment of the head. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of a modification. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of the modification.
Myinvention is especially intended for use in connection with metal bedsteads, and the construction of the mattress or spring frame and the head and foot is of the preferred contour when constructed of metal.
As here shown, the spring or mattress frame is constructed of l .shaped angle-irons and the head and foot are provided with tubular standards 2, and these tubular standards are connected by suitable ornamental connecting bars or rods 3.
Projecting horizontally inward from the standard 2 of the head and foot are the metallic plates 4. These metallic plates 4 eX- tend into the tubular standards and are here shown as connected therewith by means of rivets and an upwardly-projecting shoulder within the tubular standards. However, it will be readily understood that other forms of connections may be adopted, or the standards and plates may be made of one piece of metal in some instances. The upper outer ends of these plates are provided with the eyes 5 and their inner ends with the recesses or notches 6.
Formed in the end of the mattress or spring frame by cutting out a portion of one of the L-shaped angle-plates l are the vertical slots Serial No. 71,329. (No model.)
S. Vertical slots 9 are cut in the horizontal portions of the longitudinal L-shaped bars l for the purpose of receiving the upwardlyprojecting eyes 5 ofthe outer ends of the said plates. Pivoted to the spring or mattress frame are the horizontally-movable latches lO, which are preferably formed of sheet metal, as here shown, and provided with tongues 11 of a size sufficient to tit snugly the eyes 5 of the said plates after they have been projected through the L-shaped angle plates or irons. l
When the bedstead is connected, the recesses or notches 6 receive the horizontal portion of the L-shaped angle-plate, and the plates 4, which project from the standards of the head and foot, pass through the vertical slots S, while the eyes 5 of the plates pass upward through the vertical slot 9 and receive the tongue of the said latches.
Modifications in the construction of the mattress-frame may be made Without affecting the spirit or scope of my invention as defined in the claims.
By means of a bed constructed as here shown and described a very rigid connection is provided and yet one which is quickly and readily attached and detached for the purpose of setting up or knocking down the bedstead.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a bedstead, the combination of side bars provided with vertical openings, a vertical end frame having at its sides inwardlyprojecting members located under the said side bars and provided with upwardly-projecting eyes passing through said slot, and a vfastening device located above the side bars and passing through the said eyes, substantiallyas described.
2. In a bedstead, the combination of side bars provided with vertical openings, a Vertical end frame having at its sides inwardlyprojecting members passing under the said side bars, the said lnembers having upwardlyprojecting eyes located at a point removed from the sides of the vertical frame, and having their outer ends provided with notches interlocking with the said horizontal frame,
IOD
and fastening devices passing through the eyes above the side bars, substantially as described.
3. In a bedstead, the combination of side bars provided with vertical openings located at a point inside of their ends, the horizontal frame having at its end a vertical slot, a vertical end frame having at its side inwardlyprojecting plates passing through the said vertical slots, the plates having upwardlyprojecting eyes passing through the said vertical openings of the said bars, and a fastening device passing through the eyes above the side bars, substantially as described.
4. In a bedstead the combination of a horizontal frame constructed of inverted L- shaped angle-irons, the side angle-irons having vertical openings, the corners of the horizontal frame provided with vertical slots, the said plates having at their inner ends upwardly projecting eyes passing upward through the said vertical openings and at their outer ends horizontal notches interlocking with the said L-shaped angle-irons, and horizontally-pivoted latches adapted to pass through the said eyes above the side bars of the horizontal frame, substantially as described.
5. In a bedstead, the combination of a horizontal frame, the side of said frame having vertical openings, vertical end frames having outwardly extending arms provided with notches adjacent the end frame and adapted to receive the horizontal frame, upwardlyextending eyes. carried by the outer end of said arms and passing through the openings in the horizontal frame, and a member carried by said frame and adapted to pass through said eyes, substantially as described.
6. In a bedstead, the combination of side bars having horizontal portions provided with vertical openings, an end frame having at its sides inwardly-projecting members provided with verticallyprojecting portions passing Jthrough the said vertical openings of the said bars, and members interlocking with said vertically-projecting portions and engaging the side bars to lock the members together, substantially as described.
In ltestimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN ARN. Witnesses:
