Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRIGK VOIT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO FEUST 8t RICE, OF
SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CRADLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168.945, dated October 19, 1875; application filed July 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDRICK Vorr, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bedstead, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of myimproved bedstead or cradle; Fig. 2, avertical transverse section of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a detail horizontal section on the line a: 00, Fig. 2, showing connection of bed post and main frame.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved construction of bedsteads, cradles, 8w, by which the connection of the bed-posts with the connecting main frame may be made in a strong and substantial manner without the use of fastenin gs or other hardware, and a rigid interlocking of the parts obtained, together with an easy detaching of the same. 7
The invention consists of open end boards having bed-posts with inclined grooves, into which the end pieces with projecting inclined edges are introduced and seated by the wedge action of the posts.
In the drawing, A represents the posts of a bedstead, cradle, crib, &c., which are connected by head and foot boards G at such height that an open space is formed below the same to admit the introduction of the lateral end pieces B of the connecting main frame B. Frame B is constructed of side boards with lateral end pieces firmly attached thereto. The bed-posts G are provided with central grooves a, and attached to the end boards either at suitable inclination toward. the longitudinal axis or vertically thereto, in which case the grooves a are out at the requisite inclination into the posts. The projecting ends of the end pieces B are produced with an inclination corresponding exactly to that of the grooves of the post, so that they may be easily introduced into the same when held at sufficient height to clear the posts.
' When both end pieces are placed into the grooves they are slid in downward direction until, by the wedge action exerted by the posts, the connecting-frame B is firmly and rigidly supported by the same Without requiring the use of bedstead-fastening or other connecting devices. The frame is detached from the posts by raising it far enough to allow the end pieces to clear the posts. The greater the weight on the main frame the steadier and firmer is the connection of posts and frame, so that shaking is avoided, and a cheap and durable yet readily detachable bedstead, cradle, &c., is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I A bedstead, cradle, 850., constructed of bedposts with inclined grooves, in combination with a connecting-frame having end pieces with inclined projecting edges, fitting into the posts, to be firmly retained by the wedge action of the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
