SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,896, dated October '7, 1902. Application filed March 7,1902. Serial No. 97.130. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEWALL D. SAMSON, of 'Woburn, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Sash Fasteners, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to the parts and construction of a window-sash fastener by which I have a durable, easily-applied, and safe fastener and lock, the exact characteristics of which may be best understood by the following description, taken in connection with the drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through the upper rail of the lower sash and the lower rail of the upper sash and also through the fastener. Fig. 2 shows in elevation a part of the upper rail of the lower sash and also parts of my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 show details.
In the drawings, the two sash-rails are indicated by A and B. The sash-rail A has inserted in it a socket-piece quill C, which is made of thin metal, having a screw-thread, as indicated by T, pressed in its wall, so as to present a depressed thread on the inside and a raised thread on the outside. This screw-quill is provided with kerfs on its outer end, whereby with the aid of a screw-driver it may be forced into its socket in the sashrail. The bolt D has a screw-thread D on its inner end, a collar D, and a squared outer end D The key-piece or knob H (shown in section in Fig. 1 and in full in Fig. at) has a square socket made in its body part H, adapted to engage with the square part D of the bolt. It also has a collar H A swinging escutcheon K serves as a latch for preventing the knob H from being withdrawn accidentally, since the opening V V in the escutcheon K is not broad enough to admit of the passage of the collar H To withdraw the knob, the escutcheon can be turned upward, swinging on the screw S. The small knob K is placed on the escutcheon for convenience in handling.
To use my fastener after the parts have been attached, the rails A and B are brought together and the screw-bolt D turned in until the collar D comes in contact with the shoulder 13. This will hold the two rails firmly together, as shown in Fig. 1. hen desired to remove the knob H, the escutcheon K is lifted, which will leave the knob free to be withdrawn, and it will be difficult for any one to remove the locking-bolt D.
A window-sash fastener; comprising a socket-piece quill, having struck-up screwthreads serving to hold itin the wood and to receive the screw-bolt; a screw-bolt adapted to engage with the said quill and having a collar adapted to engage with the shoulder on the rail of the lower sash and thereby holding the same firmly to the rail of the upper sash, the said bolt also having a square shank adapt ed to receive a knob; and said knob, adapted to engage with said bolt and operate the same, andhaving a collar as described; and an escutcheon adapted to engage with the said collar on said knob, and thus prevent the knob from being removed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 18th day of February, A. D. 1902.
SEWALL D. SAMSON.
