JAMES M. ATWOOD, OF PLYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.
FASTENER FOR M EETlNG-RAILS OF SASH ES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,367, dated November 17, 1885.
Application filed March 2, 1885. Serial No. 157,485. (ModeL) To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. ATwooD, of Plymouth, in the county of Plymouth, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following isa description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a top or plan View representing my improved sash-fastener in use and locked; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3, a like View representing it unlocked, and Fig. 4 a side elevation of the catch.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to that class of sashfasteners which are designed to be attached to the meeting-rails of the sash; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more effective and otherwise desirable article of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation, its extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
In the drawings, A represents the top or meeting rail of the lower sash B, the bottom or meeting rail of the upper sash; C, the body; D, the catch; and E, the lever. The body 0 is provided with laterally-projecting flanges w, by which and the screwsm it is attached to the rail B, the catch D being provided with corresponding flanges, f, and secured to the rail A by screws d. The body 0 is vertically slotted, as seen at t, to receive the end of the lever E, which is pivoted or jointed thereto by the pintle r. The outer or free end of the lever is screw-threaded, and provided with a round or cylindrical nut, H, having a socket, z, in its outer end to receive the rivet-head 12 formed on the outer end of the lever, and by Which the nut is prevented from being accidentally turned outward so far as to drop off or be lost from the lever. The body of the catch I D consists of an upwardly-projecting flange, which is vertically slotted, as seen at g, to receive the body of the lever when it is turned down into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and its outer face is counterbored or provided with a socket, w, to receive the inner end of the nut H.
In the use of my improvement, to lock the sash the lever E is turned down into ahorizontal position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the nut H turned in as far as possible. \Vllen the lever rests in the slot 9, and the nut is turned on, as described, the nut will be brought 6 into contact with the bottom of the socket, and the rails A B forced together and locked in a manner which will be readily obvious without a more explicit description. As the diameter of the socket at its center is greater than the width of the slot, it will be obvious that when the sash is locked the lever cannot be raised without first turning back the nut sufficiently to withdraw it from the socket.
Having thus explained my invention, What I 75 claim is- The combination of a plate or body, 0, for attachment to the upper sash, a screw-threaded lever pivoted thereto and adapted to swing in a vertical plane, an adjustable screw-threaded head on said lever, and a catch for attachment to the lower sash provided with an upright flange having a transverse slot adapted to receive the said lever, and with a sockethole in its outer face adapted to receive the inner end of said adjustable head, substantially as described.
JAMES M. ATWOOD.
