Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 1906.
Application filed February 26,1906. Serial No, 302,348.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Eoxien, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of'Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Locks 5 and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawin s and the numerals of reference marks thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a sash-lock constructed in ac cordance with In invention; Fig. 2, a broken vertical sections. view of the same; Fi 3, a top or plan view of the kee er detache Fi 4, a top or plan view of t e look detached, Fig. 5, a front view of the look.
This invention relates to an improvement in sash-locks, and particularly to devices which are arranged at the meeting-rails of sashes and are in a sense automatic, the object of the invention being a simple arrange ment of parts whereby when the sashes are in a closed position they will be locked and may be so securely looked that the cannot be opened from the outside; an the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
The case 2 which is ada ted to be secured to the upper rail 3 of the ower sash, is of a box-like character, with flanges 4, having screw-holes 5 by which the case may be secured to the said u per rail. The case aiso includes a front wallb and a rear wail 7. The. bolt 8 has a head 9, the under face 10 of which is inwardly beveled. This bolt is formed with a stem 1 1, which passes throu h the case and projects beyond the wall 6. c this stem 2:. plate 12 is attached, the plate formed with a thumb-piece 13, and below the stem the plate is formed with a screw-threaded opening 13 to receive a screw '14, which passes into a suitably-threaded hole 15 in the out wall 6, the screw being provided with a knurled head 16, b which it may be conveniently turned. pen the shank 1 l within the case is a spiral s 17, the tendency of which is to throw t e bolt outward. The striker or keeper consists of a post 18, rising from a baselate 19, which is adapted to be screwed to t e lower rail of the 11 per sash. At the upper end of this post is a orwardlyprojecting lug 20, having a beveled upper face 21 to coast with the beveled face 19 of the bolt, which bolt is adapted to pass beneath the lug 20 when the sashes are in a closed osition. I
In t e closed position the bolt 8 sprmgs forward, so as to project the head 10 below the lug 9, and hence prevent the up er sash from bein lowered or the lower sash rorn be ing raise In this position the plate 12 bears against the front face of the wall 6 and may be locked thereto by the screw 14, thus preventing the withdrawal of the bolt. To unlock the window, the screw is first turned outward to disengage the plate 12 from the front wall 6, whereupon the bolt 8 may be readily withdrawn by a pull upon the f ngerpiece 13, the bolt being retracted sufiiciently to clear the lug 20 of the keeper. When thus "retracted, the sashes may be removed as desired. As the sashes approach the oiosed osition the beveled face if) of the boltstri es the beveled face 21 of the lug, and owm to the parallel inclination of the parts the olt will move inward until it p asses the lug, when it will fly outward under the action of the spring and bring the parts to a.locked 081- tion. When the bolt is thrown beneat the keeper and locked there by the screw 14, it IS impossible to disengage the bolt from the keeper by an means outside short of breakin some of the parts.
2. A sash-lock comprising a housing, abolt arranged to move therein, said bolt formed with a stem projecting through the front face of the housing, a spring on said stem within the housin a plate connected with the outer end of sai stem, a screw mounted in said piate and adapted to engage with the for Ward well of the housing whereby the plate is In testimony whereof I have signed this looked thereto, said bolt formed with a head specification in the presence of two subscribhaving a beveled under face, and a keeper ing Witnesses.
having :1 lug beneath which the bolt is adept- CHARLES H. ECKER. 5 ed to pass, said keeper having a beveled u Witnesses:
per face to coaet with the beveled face of t e D. WARD NORTHROP bolt, substantially as described. WALTER HADDOOK.
