Description

W. STAHLY.
SASH LOCK FOR WINDOWS- APPLICATION HLED JULY 30. I915.
pnrrnn snares earner ai men.
WILLIAIVI STAHLY, 0F LONG ISLANLD-CITY, NEW YORK.
SASH-LOCK FOE WINDOWS.
Application filed July 30, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM STAHLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Astoria, Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks for Windows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in sash locks and my object is to provide means for locking the lower sash against movement and at the same time limit the movement of the upper sash. And a further object is to provide a cheap, durable and strong locking device and one that can be readily applied to use.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the accompanying specification.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure l is a fragmentary front elevation of an upper andlower sash showing my improved lock applied to use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view as seen on line 2, 2 of Fig. 1', the bolt being shown in full lines, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking bolt.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the lower sash of a window, 2 the upper sash and 3 the window frame which are of the usual or any preferred construction.
Attached to the frame 3 and in juxtaposition to the path of the lower Sash 1 is a keeper l, said keeper having a horizontally disposed slot 5 in the outer wall thereof to receive the stem 6 of a T-head 7, said T-head being carried at the end of the angular extension 8 of a locking bolt 9. The keeper 4 is so positioned that when the T-head 7 is engaged therewith, the bolt will extend im mediately over the top of the lower sash 1, thereby preventing the lower sash from being raised, and in order to limit the movement of the upper sash 2, the inner end of the locking bolt is provided. with a Thead 10 which enters an elongated vertically dis posed keeper 11, said keeper having a vertically extending slot 12 through which the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1916. Serial No. 42,747.
stem 13 of the T-head 10 travels. The lower end of the keeper 11 has a square opening 14 in its outer face for the reception of the end of the locking bolt and in order to properly guide the locking bolt into said open mg, a clip 15 is attached to the upper face of the lower sash, said clip having an angular extension 16 through which is formed an opening 1'1 to receive the end of the bolt. The bolt 9 is anchored to the keeper 4: by means of a chain 18, one end of the chain being attached to a ring19 on the keeper and the opposite end to a ring 20 on the bolt, said chain being designed to guard against the loss or misplacement of the locking bolt, the length of the chain being such as to permit of free sliding action of the bolt when being moved into locked or unlocked position, and will suspend the bolt from the keeper when the bolt is not in use.
In applying the device to use, both of the sashes are moved to their closed positions, thus bringing the opening 14 into registration with the opening 17 of the clip when the head on the angular extension is engaged with the keeper 4 and the head at the end of the bolt with the keeper 11, this operation securely locking the lower sash against upward "movement. the upper sash for ventilating purposes, the downward movement thereof will enter the stem 13 in the slot 12 causing the T-head 10 to interlock with the walls of the keeper 11 and when the upper sash is in such lowered position, it will be impossible to remove the locking bolt. As the upper end of the keeper 11 is closed the movement of the upper sash is limited to the length of the keeper 11, and as the bolt is interlocked with the keeper 11 it will be impossible for any one to introduce an instrument over the top of the upper sash and release the bolt and neither can an instrument be introduced between the meeting edges of the sashes to release the bolt as the flange 21 at the lower end of the keeper 11 will form a stop for any instrument introduced between the sashes and prevent the same from coming in contact with the locking bolt.
As all of the parts of this invention are constructed of metal, it will be practically indestructible from use and can be attached to any window sash or frame and if desired can be removed from one frame and engaged with another.
Having thus fully described my invention-- what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In a sash lock, the combination with a a point adjacent the inner end thereof, a'
vertically disposed keeper secured to said upper sash and having a vertically disposed 7 slot formed in itsfront wall and an opening adjacent the lower end thereof comn1unicatin'g with said slot, said vertically disposed keeper having ahorizontal flange immediately below said opening to prevent the introduction of an implement into the slot, a locking bolt having an angular extension at its outer end, a horizontally disposed T- 'head formed onsaid extension adapted "to interlock with the slot of the horizontally disposed keeper on the frame, a vertically disposed T-head formed on the inner end of said bolt adapted to enter said opening of the vertically disposed keeper and interlock with said keeper when moved upwardly into the vertically extending slot of said keeper, a guide clip arranged on the lower sash, said clip being formed with an apertured vertical leg and a horizontal leg, said bolt adapted to rest upon the horizontal leg and extend through the aperture in the verticalleg.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I WILLIAM STAI-ILY. Witnesses:
CHAs. BURHAMP, HENRY SCHMIDT.
I copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
