(No Model.)
B. BERNSTEIN. FASTENER FOR THE MEETING RAILS 0F SASHE-S.
No. 495,659. Patented Apr. 18, 1893.
.NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENNY BERNSTEIN, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
FASTENER FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,659, dated April 18, 1893.
Application filed November 20, 1891. Serial No. 412,536. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENNY BERNSTEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of NewYork, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in VVindow-Sash Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sash fastening devices, and it has for its objects to provide a device by means of which either a swinging or a sliding sash maybe securely fastened on the inside, automatically, when the same is set down or closed, and to this end this invention consists in the combination with a suitable keeper, forming one part of the device, of a weighted locking bar and support forming the other part, the two parts being constructed and arranged so as to interlock automatically when brought together, as more fully hereinafter described and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The objects above mentioned are attained by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification and in which the same reference numeralsindicate like parts in the respective figures.
In the said drawings-Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of a window framev showing two vertically sliding sashes arranged therein in a closed position with my improved device applied thereto and locked. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the fastening devices detached, showing the parts in solid lines in locked position and the locking arm in dotted lines, in position to permit the parts to be locked or unlocked. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the device shown in a locked position. Fig. 4. represents a front view of a keeper forming part of the device, and a side view of the interlocking part. Fig. 5 represents a front view of the keeper with the interlocking part locked therein. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of a portion of the upper and lower sliding sashes of a window showing my device applied thereto, the keeper being shown as out of position for engagement with the locking arm. Fig. 7 represents a perspective view showing my device applied to a skylight or scuttle or similar opening. Fig. 8 represents the parts of the device as constructed to be applied to a skylight separated and in position to become locked when closed, and Fig. 9 is a similar view showing the parts interlocked as when the sash of the skylight is closed down.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a metallic plate provided with apertures for fastening screws and a projecting bar 2, having an inclined contracted neck 3 and shoulder 4. Upon the neck is fitted a sleeve 5 having a weighted arm 6, the sleeve being adapted to turn freely on the neck, abutting against the shoulder, being confined on the neck by means of a headed screw 7.
The numeral 8 indicates a keeper. This consists of a fiat metallic plate having open lips 12 formed with curved edges, the opening 13 between the lips being of less width than the diameter of the bar 2 so that said bar cannot pass between said lips, but of greater width than the diameter of the weighted arm 6 to permit the said arm to pass freely through said opening. As shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 of the drawings, the keeper is swiveled or pivoted at the point 9 to its supporting plate, and is provided with an arm and knob 10, by means of which it may be turned to and from the positions shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 to the position shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. This is to permit the keeper to be thrown into engaging position with its interlocking part, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, or to permit it to be thrown out of the way to permit the sliding sashes to pass each other when desired for replacing or washing the panes.
The numeral 11 indicates a stop to limit the movement of the keeper.
In the modification shown in Figs. 7,8 and 9 in which the device is shown as employed to look .a skylight, the keeper is shown as formed in one piece, as it is unnecessary to change its position.
As shown in Fig. l the keeper is secured to the upper edge of the meeting rail of the lower sash of a window, the interlocking part carrying the hinged locking arm being secured to the top of the meeting rail of the upper sash.
The weighted arm hangs normally in an inclined position as shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 by reason of the inclination of the bearing. It will be seen therefore that when the parts of the device are brought together, the weighted arm rides over the curved edge of one of the lips of the keeper and falls to one side heneath the same, owing to its weight and inclination, thus locking the parts together. To unlock the sashes the weighted arm is turned into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, so as to bring the arm opposite the opening between the lips of the keeper when the lower sash may be raised or the upper sash lowered.
As shown in Fig. 7 the bar carrying the weighted arm is secured to the hinged downwardly closing sash or hatch 14:, and the keeper to the inner edge of the opening, which it closes. The weighted arm in this case by reason of its inclination is normally parallel with the edge of the hatch or sash and assumes such position, in whatever position the sash may be placed,so that when the sash is closed it enters between the lips riding over the curved edges thereof and falling into the interlocked position shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings.
The mouth of the keeper is made flaring and to taper toward the opposite side'where the opening is only of slightly larger diameter than the diameter of the weighted arm; and as before stated the opening between the lips of the keeper is smaller than the bar so that said bar cannot escape through such opening and the arm can only escape from the keeper when brought in line with the opening of such lips. In the sash fastener the keeper is movable or moves with a movable part of the structure and the locking weight arm is stationary, while the reverse is the case when used to look a skylight, the keeper in this instance being stationary and the weighted locking bar movable; and because of the large opening forming the mouth of the keeper, the entrance within the keeper of the interlocking arm and bar is assured even should the parts of the fastening not be exactly in line caused by the sagging of the window. The edge of the keeper that engages the weighted locking arm is also curved as shown in Fig. 3 at 16 to form a seat for said arm so that its accidental escape from engagement with the keeper is prevented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-
1. The combination in a fastening for window sashes &c. with a bar provided with an inclined neck and shoulder and a weighted locking arm swiveled thereto, of a keeper having open curved lips and pivoted to a base plate, whereby it can be turned to an engag ing position with the interlocking part or turned out of the way of the same, substantially as specified.
2. A fastening for window sashes &c.,consisting of a bar secured to the top of one of the meeting rails of the window sashes and having a weighted arm swiveled thereon, a keeper provided with curved open lips adapted to receive the bar and arm, and secured upon the top of the opposite meeting rail of the window sashes, and means for boldin g the weighted arm parallel with the edges of the meeting rails to insure the proper engagement of the parts and. to prevent the weighted arm assuming such a position as to prevent the'closing of the sashes, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENNY BERNSTEIN.
