CORSET ATTACHMENT AND STOCKING-SUPPORTER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,887, dated September 9, 1902.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUCY BROWN INGHAM,

a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilkesbarre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Corset Attachment-and Stocking-Supporter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a novel, simple, and inexpensive attachment for a corset which when worn iswell adapted for support of the abdomen, and also to afford convenient and reliable means for supporting womens hose in a manner which will conduce greatly to the comfort of the wearer.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described, and defined in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicatecorresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvements attached to a corset. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of the corset attachment, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view substantiallyon the line3 3 in Fig. 2. v

The corset 10, shown to illustrate the relative position of the novel attachment thereon, may be of any preferred style, closed in front by the usual busks, having detachable connections a of the ordinary kind.

The improved attachment comprises two preferably thin metal plates 11, formed, as

shown at the right in Fig. 2, wherein said half-section of the novel attachment is represented as having afour-cornered periphery, the two inner corners b being angular and the outer corners crounded, merging into a slightly-convexed outer edge d,eaoh plate having apertures 0 formed therein to lighten it.

It is to be understood that the two-halfsections of the corset attachment are duplicates, and each one is perforated in series near the upper edge, as shown at e in Fig 2, affording stitch-holes for securing the halfsection 11 upon the lower edge portions of the corset 10 by sewing it thereon.

The meeting edges of the two plate-sections llare adapted for detachableconnection by providing spaced and projecting eyesg on one of the plate-sections, which may be engaged by the studs 71., that project outwardly from the other plate-section, and thus secure said edges together, these connecting devices being essentially similar to the detachable connections (1, provided to secure the front edges of the corset-busks and hold the corset :closed, and are disposed in alinement therewith when the corset and the attachment are donned and secured upon the person of the lent means, and in connecting the plate-sec tions upon the lower edges of the corset the upper portions of the fibrous covers 12' are secured upon the lower forward edge portions of the corset by sewing or by equivalent means.

The relative position of the two sections of the corset attachment with regard to the front of the corset is such as will dispose the adjacent edges of the corset-front and like edges on the halves of the attachment, respectively in alinement, so that said half-sections of the attachment are practically downward extensions of the corset and may be connected or detached from each other along with the corset in a very convenient manner.

Upon the lower edge of each of the platesections 11 a flat loop 13, of plate metal,is secured, and between each loop-plate 13 and the section 11 upon which it is affixed one end of a link 14 is pivoted. The links 14 are short and of equal length, each one having a tubular formation 7) on the lower end thereof.

A laterally-elongated coupling-ring 15 is secured loosely in each tubular formation 1' for the reception of the upper end of a pliable strip 16, forming the upper portion of a stocking-supporting device that is secured in the ring by any preferred means. The-depending pliable strips 16 are connectedat their lower ends with extensions 17, having on their lower ends attaching devices m, of any preferred construction,affording means for readily connecting the stocking-supports with the upper portions of womens hose. The stocking-supporting devices may be adjustable lengthwise and, if desired, may be made of strips of webbing, eitherelastic or otherwise, as may be preferred.

In use the stocking-supporting devices being of proper length to suit the stature of the wearer will be disposed at the front of the body and in walking or standing erect will draw equally upon the stockings and the plate-sections 11, which will put supportingpressure on the lowerportion of the abdomen of the wearer sulficient to prevent an objectionable protrusion of the same.

It has been found in use that the novel abdominal support comprised of the plate-sections 11, which depend from the corset 10, and the stocking-supports that extend therefrom afford very effective cooperating means for the purposes they are designed to subserve, and as the plate-sections 12, which serve as an abdominal supporter,are substan' tially quadrate in form with round outer corners and have considerable area they alford comfort in use if the wearer is sitting, standing, or walking, which is not the case with some other devices for the same purpose.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a corset attachment, the two-part abdominal support, comprising duplicate platesections each of nearly quadrate form, securable at their upper edges upon the lower edge of a separable corset-front, so that their upright meeting edges will aline with like edges of the corset, loop-plates and studs at the upright edges on the plate-sections for their detachable connection, and links depending from lower edges of the plate-sections, having laterally-swinging connection with the lower portions of the plate-sections,andadapted to connect stocking-supports therewith.

2. The combination with the open front of a corset, of an abdominal support, compris ing two similar nearly-square plate-sections having rounded outer corners, and fibrous coverings thereon, said plate-sections being secured upon the lower edge of the corset at the front, the upright edges of plate-sections alining with respective front edges of the corset, a pendent link held to rock laterally upon the lower edge portion of each plate-section, tubular formations on lower ends of thelinks, and two pliable stocking-supporters loosely connected with the tubular formations.
