Be it known that I, GEORGER. BURDON, of Waltham, in the county of Middlesex, and State of' Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Blocking-Brush; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full andexact Ispecification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts a`s I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.

The present invention relates to a blackiug-brush for boots and shoes more particularly, and it relates to that class of such brushes as are provided with two brushing surfaces, the one for applying.,r the blacking to the Vboot, etc., and the other for rubbing and polishing the boot after the blacking is applied.

The invention consists in attaching or securing to the back of the brush, in any suitable manner to be readily'detached, a box or receptacle of blacking, and in so hanging the brush on the saine side of the blackingbrush thereto that it can be swung over to and upon the blacking in the box for being coated or provided therewith; and when being swung back to its original position will .be so held that the blacking contained in it can be applied to the boot'or shoe, `as the case may be.

This invention also consists in hanging the brush for applying the blacking to and in its holder, by which it is hinged to the back of the brush, that when brought or swung over upon the blacking it can be turned or revolved, and thus the blacking appliedmuch more thoroughly thereto.

In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved blaeking-brush is illustrated, the ligure being a central section through the brush, in the direction'ot` its length.

A, in the drawings, represents the holder or body of the brush, having handle B at one end C, bristles secured in one side ot' holder A, and constituting. that portion of the brush by which the boot,`after bl-acking has been applied to it, is rubbed and polished.v D, the back of the holder A, having at its outer end the brushl E for applying the blocking. This brush E is composed of bristles F- secured in a holder or block, Gr, grooved around its edge H, in which ts a ring, I. By this ring I the block G is hinged to the upright J of the main holder A, so as to swing thereon, and thus enable the bristles constituting the brush to be brought over into a position toward the back of the main holder A, and into contact with the blacking contained in a box or receptacle, L, that is attached to the back ofthe holder A. M, a spring-catch secured to holder A in proper position to hold the brush E in place for applying blacking to the boot or shoe. v

From the above description f my improved blacking-brush it will be seen that to apply the blacking, the brush E is first swung over to the b'lacking in the box L, and supplied with blacking therefrom, when, being swung back to its original position, the blacking' contained in it is then applied to the boot or shoe, after which i the brush C is used for rubbing and polishing the same as with the ordinary blacking-brushes. The brush E is hung in its ring I so as to turn, which, when the brush is over upon the blacking-box, enables it to be the more perfectly and the better covered with blacking. i

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-` The combination and arrangement of the brush E with the grooved head G, ring I, spring M, joint J, holder A, and blacking-box L, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
