Description

Patented Sept. 5, I899.
A. V. .GOLTERMANN.
T 0 U T H B R U S H (Application filed Mar. 7, 1899.)
(No Model.)
l/I I W/ TN E 8828/ WN VE N 770/?- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADA V. GOLTERMANN, OF EAST ORANGE, NEYV JERSEY.
TOOTH-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,524, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed March 7, 1899. Serial No. 708,088. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
lle it known that I, ADA Y. GOLTERMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved toothbrush in which, in place of a stationary handleintegral with the brush-head, a detachable handle is employed, which can be used in connection with a number of brush-heads as one after the other is gradually worn out by use; and the invention consists of a toothbrush consisting of a brush-head having a short shank, an enlarged shoulder near the brush-head, a detachable tubular handle, and an elastic packing-sleeve interposed between the shank and handle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent, respectively, a side view and a plan view of my improved tooth-brush. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the brush shown as detached from the handle. Fig. at is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, also detached from the handle; and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section on line 5 5, Fig. 1, drawn on a larger scale.
- ""Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the brush-head of my improved tooth-brush, which is made in the usual manner and provided with a short shank a. Adjacent to the brush-head A is arranged an enlargement or shoulder 19 on the shank, against which abuts a tubular handle B, which may be made of hard rubber, celluloid, sheet metal, or any other suitable material, plain or ornamented,
as desired. The tubular handle B is tightly fitted on the shank a of the brush-head A by means of an interposed packing-sleeve d, which is made of cork, leather, felt, or other suitable elastic material, so that a tight connection between the brush and the handle is obtained, while at the same time the handle can be readily detached from the brush-head whenever it is desired to remove a worn-out brush and apply it to a new brush-head. In placing the tooth-brush on the market it is intended to supply a box containing a handle and about half a dozen brush-heads. The sleeves are secured on the shank by a suitable cement, so as not to get loose on the same, and are preferably made of cork, which possesses the proper degree of elasticity and frictional surface, so that a firm connection is made when the shank is inserted in the tubular handle. Besides tooth-brushes, nail and other brushes can be made up in the same manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A tooth-brush, consisting of a brush-head having a short shank, an enlarged shoulder on said shank near the head, a detachable tubular handle, and an elastic packing-sleeve interposed between the. shank and handle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADA V. GOLTERMANN.
