IMPROVED SHOE AND STOVE BRUSH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,709, dated November 13, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, F. M. CARNES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoe and other Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side sectional View of my invention, taken in the line :t fr, Fig. 25 Fig. 2, a plan or top view ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and usefulimprovement in that class of brushes which are used for applying to articles a polishing` material and afterward polishing the substance by rubbing or friction produced by the brushsuch, for instance, as shoe brushes, stovebrushes, &c.
The invention consists in an improvement in the portion of the brush by which the polishing material is applied, as hereinafter fully .tf-shown and described, whereby the work of polishing articles is greatly facilitated.
A represents a brush having one side provided with bristles a for polishing, and arranged the same as an ordinary shoe or stove brush. B is a handle attached to the brush. 0n the side or back of the brush opposite to where the bristles a are attached there is secured a sheet-metal box, G, in the front or outer end of which there is fitted a small cy lindrical brush, D, which is allowed to rotate freely. Vithi'n the box C a cake of blacking, E, is fitted, with its front end in contact with the brush D and its rear end in contact with a plate, F, having a screw, b, attached, said screw passing through the rear of the box C, and having a nut, Gr, upon it, by turning which the plate F may be moved in the boX C and the end ofthe cake of blacking E kept in contact with the brush, wear of the cake being compensated for by this means.
In using the device the cylindrical brush D is dipped in water, and said brush rubbed over the shoe or other article to -be blackened or polished, the rotation ot' the brush D causing it to be well charged with blacking, which is applied to the article.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A l. The rotary brush D, in combination with the polishin g-brus'h A, arranged or applied substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The movable plate "F, adjusted or operated by the screw b and nut G, or their equivalents, in combination with the rotary brush D and cake of blacking E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
