Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. McGILL, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new anu useful Blacking-Brusl1g and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being, had to the accompanying drawings, making,r part of this specification.'

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brush embodying my invention. i

A and Brepresent respectively the stock or handle and thebrush proper, and may be of any approved form.

In the place and stead of the ordinary spreading-brush, I provide a cylindrical brush, C, whose gudgeons, c, are made to occupy apertures, d or d', in steel-spring standar-ds, D D', made fast tothe back of the stock The standards D D are provided with lips, d, which embrace but permit the rotation of a common blnckingbox, E. d

The action of my improvement is as follows: A box of blocking, E, without its lid, is pressed in between the standards D D', and the cylindrical brush, C, inserted, with its gudgeons, c, in the upper holes of the standards. The brush C is then rubbed briskly over the boot or shoe te be blacked, and applied to all parts of the latter until the same is coated with blacking, after which the polishing is electedby means f the brush proper, B, as usual. F is a cover, adapted to be closed snugly over the spreading-brush and blacking-box when not in use. The box E, being partially rotated between the times of using, enables the cylindrical brush to reabh every part, and thus use` up the entire contents. i

While preferring steel for the material of the standards, I reserve the right to employ brass or other suitable material. Again, one or both of the standards may be of cast iron or other rigid material, and may be adjusted in or out by means of a slot and screw.

I claim herein as new, and of my invcntonl. In combination with the spreading-brush, the cover, made and operating`substantially as and for the purpose herein described. l
