'lO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HENFIELD, of' the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California.. have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Mede of Securing the Soft-Metal Lining to Boxes of Railway-Gers and Shaft-Bearings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art te make end use the same, reference being hed.-
to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a. central longitudinal section of a, cur-axle box, shewin` my improvement. Figure 2 is a cross-section of the same. Figure 3 is an inside view of one of the end-caps which secure the lining in place. Figure 4 is an outside view of an end-cap.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of boxes for car-axles pr journals, and co'nsists in an arrangement of parts forholding the lining of Babbit metal, or other soft metal, securely in place Within the shell ofthe box, pins orspurs projecting from the sides of' the lining into the bottom und top ofthe shell, to preventany rotating movement of the linings, and alseinetnl @nps or side pieces being screwed onto the ends of the shell or box, to prevent the linings from startingr or falling ont endwise, as hereinafter more particularly described.
A A represent the shells or body of the double box, which may be made of' cast or malleable iron, in which are fitted, as usual, linings ft @made of Babbit or other suitable metal for the bearings. The linings a a. in the upper and lower parts ofthe box are'eneh provided with pins or\spurs e e, which iit into holes made in the shells A A, and hold the linings firmly, to prevent any rotating movement, and against the ends of the linings, endpieces er caps e e, the inside of which are grooved to match the bevel edges of the linings, as shown in iig. 1, and thus hold them snug, and tight endwise.
Having described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the grooved caps e e, the linings tz a, provided with pins e c, and the shells A A, arranged as and for the purpose herein described.
