Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ERIC WI. PALMQUIST, OF EAST ST. LOUIS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO LEIGH- TON d; HOWARD STEEL COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPO- RATION.
BOLSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 702,818, dated J une 17, 1902.
Application led March 8, 1902.
T all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, ERIC W. PALMQUIST, a citizen of the United States, residing in East St. Louis, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolsters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, forming part of this specication.
My invention relates to a bolster so formed that while provision is made for the use of the king-bolt, yet it is done in such a manner as not to materially weaken the bolster at its central or middle portion.
The invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a top or plan View of my iinproved bolster, part in horizontal section. Fig. II is a side view, part in vertical section. Fig. III is a vertical transverse section taken on line III III, Fig. II.
l represents the bolster, which in general form or shape may be of any approved style. I have shown it as composed of an upper flange or chord 2, a lower iiange or chord 3, and a connecting-web et.
is the king-holt opening, located at the base of the center bearing 6. This opening is formed in a post 7, that is cast integral with the body oi' the bolster and which is strengthened by integral wings 8. About the middle of the web portion of the bolster there is Serial No. 97.317. (No model.)
formed an integral boss or enlargement 9, through which passes a horizontal aperture lO. As will be observed from the drawings, the king-bolt opening only extends through the upper portion of the bolster, the lower portion of the bolster being left imperforate, so that its strength is not impaired. The horizontal opening provides means of access to the lower end of the king-bolt,so that a keyv can, if desired, be passed through the bolt, and the horizontal aperture also affords means for prying the king-bolt out when necessary for it to be removed.
I claim as my inventionl. A bolster consisting of an upper and lower chord, and a connectingweb, said upper chord and the upper portion of the connecta ing-web being formed with a king-bolt opening, and said web having a horizontal opening at the base of the king-bolt opening, substantially as set forth.
2. A bolster having an upper and lower chord, a connecting-web, a post formed integral with the upper chord and the upper part of said web, and which is provided with a king bolt openingy and a horizontal boss formed integral with said web and through which an aperture is formed, substantially as described.
ERIC IV. PALMQUIST.
