.MA/r Cura n -u nur l 'lil 1,029,869. CAR-TRUCK FRAMI". Cmaaucn H. llowarm and llaaav M. lraaoaa, St. Louis` Mo., assignors to Double Body Holster Com muy, St. Louis, Mo., a Corporation of Yew Jersey. Filed Dec. 13, 1911. Serial No. (165,579.
To all whom it may concern.'
lle it known that we, Chaussee. ll. Now- .um and ll/uuiv M. lrmolca, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have, invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Car-'l`ruek Frames` of which the following is a full, clear and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the nrt to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-f. v Figure I is a top dan view of a truck frame ol' our impl-oreal const ructiou. Fig. .2
is a plan view partly inhorizontal section of one side of n truck frame of our improved construction. Fig. it is a lsection taten the. linel 2t2l of Fig. I. Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section taken approximately on the. line l--4 of Fig. 1.
'l`his invention relates generally to cat' truck frames of the type which are cast or formed iu a single. piece, aml more part icularly to the meansl for comici-ting the upper portions of the .swing hangers to the truck frame.
'l`he ninci ml ob'ects of our invention are? to provide strong, substantial bearings for the up er ends of the swing hangers at the ends of the transoms of the truck, and to reinforce thel transomsadjacent to the bearings for the swing hangers in order to'fully overcollie all strains and stresses which may be g imparted to the truck frame by said swing hangers while in service.
'l`o the above purposes our invention con- 1 sists in certain novel features of construc-I tion and arrangement of parts hereinafter' more fully described and claimed.
ln the drawings we have illustrated a four-wheel cast metal truck frame the same eomprising the side or wheel pieces 1 and the transversely disposed inner transoms 2 and outer transoms It. These transoms are preferably ehanmlshaped in cross section,
euch comprising a vertically disposed web.y
the widened end portions 4 adjacent tlhe openings 5 are. vertically disposed webs 6 which occupy iositionsparallel wlth the .i vertical webs of the inner transoms 2, and lformed through these vertical webs 6 andi lthe vertical webs of the inner transoms 2 immediately'above the openings 5 are apertures 7 which are in horizontal alinement with one another. lf desired these aperj `tures 7 may bc provided with bushings 8, although this construction is not absolutely essential. Uniting the upper portion of each web 6 with the adjacent vertical web of the inner transom is a horizontally disposed web t). 'lhe vertically disposed web tl and horizontally dis osed web f) combine. to form an 'inverterV L-sha ed housing directly over the opening 5, w iich housin materially strengthens the vertical web an bottom flange of the transom, and the vertical web 0 provided with the opening 7 forms a bearing for one end of the pin or bolt I frolu which the swing hanger .f\ is suspelulill.
'l`he construction just described forms very strong. substantial bearings [or the upnu' ends of the swing hangers which, as lureinlafore stated, project through the openings- 5 and receive horizontally disposed plus lt which extend thi-nigh openings formed in the upper ends of' said swing hangers and through the bushings in the opcniu1`-I T. 'I'he webs tl are connected with the vertical webs of tho inner transouis bv the webs tt which extend horizontally with said transoms, thereby avoiding any crossed connectingmembersbetween tlu` iuljacentinnel and, outer transoms, which latter construction is dillicult to cast besides being liable to cause shrinkage cracks which materially weaken eastin softhiseluuacter. 'l`he end portions of the )ottoln flanges of the inner transoms are widened in order to provide. ample strength for the trausoms at. the points where the swing hangers are suspended, and such widening makes up for the metal removed by the formation of the openings in said bottom flanges.
When in service car truck frames are subjected to strains (lue to constant movement of the swing hangers lengthwise. of the truck, which movement causes corresponding movement. toall of the. swing hanger members, and, as a result, the metal in the transoms of the truck frame is gradually fatigued, and to overcome this action the ends of the inner transoms are widened and extra wide gusset plates between the ends of the transoms and the wheel or side pieces of the frame are utilized, (hereby bringing both transoms into action at the same time to resist thee-:trains due to the. lmekward and toni (langes ada te to receive thc u iper ends of swing iangers. and inverted l..- shiiped reinforcing members iiitegral with sau l ings. i 2. A cast metal truck frame. provided with transoms having the bottom flanges widened at the ends and which widened end portions i. are provided with openings adapted to reccive the u per ends of the swing hangers,
transoms immediately over said open- I' widened portions of the bottom flanges of It will be readily understood that minor i l vertically isposed webs integral with the tions of the vertically disposed webs and the webs of the transoms.
frame having transoms which are channel shaped in cross section and the bottoni there being openings formed in Said webs und in the webs of the transoms for the suspension pins of the swing hangers and horizontally disposed langes connecting the iippei' portions of the webs on the bottoni flanges of the. webs of said fraines.
, 7. ln ii ear truck frame a transom having v.a bottoni llangc provided through its end lportion with openings iidapted to receive :the upper ends ol' swing hangers, inverted L-shaped reinforcing members integral with the transoin iiiinicdiatelv over the openings therein, and the vertical walls of which reinforcing members are provided with beary ings for the swing hanger supports.
6. The herein described cast metal truck i llanges of which transoms are provided at L their end portions with openings adapted to receive the upper portions of the swing; hangers, webs on the bottom flanges of the transoms adjacent. the openings therein, t

webs integral -with the bottoni langes adarent the swing hanger openings and there icing aliiied openings formed through said webs and through the webs of the. transoms,
which :ilincd openings are iidapted to receive pins froin which the siviiig hangers are suspended.
-l. The herein described cast inelal truck traine having transoms in the end portions of the bottom llanges of which are formed openings for the. swing hangers ot' the truclt, webs integral with the bottoni luiiges of the transoms adjacent. the openings therein. there being aliiied openings in said webs and the webs of the transoms for the pins from which thc swing hangers are suspended and horizontally disposed webs connecting the upper portions of the vertically disposed webs of the webs of the transoiiis.
'l`he herein described cast metal truck traine provided with transoms having widened end portions through which are formed openings for the swing hangers, vertically disposed webs integral with the l widened end portions of the transoms adjacent the openings therein, there being openings formed in said webs and in t.lie.wcbs of the transoms` which openings receive. the pins from which the swing hangers are suspended and horizontally disposed webs integral with and connecting the upper porwith the body portion of the transom.
il. ln a ear truck traine, a transom having u bottoni hingc through which is formed openings adapted to receive the upper ends ot' swing hangers, aiul vertically disposed walls integral with the bottoni llangc adjacent to said openings, which walls are provided with bearings for the swing liiiiigei a supports.
l0. ln a car truck traine, a transom having ii bottoni lliinge through which is fornied openings adapted to receive. the iippcr ends of swing hangers. vertically disposed walls iiilegriil willi the bottoni 'flanges adjacent to said openings` and horizontally disposed plates integral with the upper ends o said platesaiid with the web of the transom.
l1. A cast nietal truck traine. comprising wheel neces. a pair of outer transoms. a
pair o inner transoms the bottoni llanges of which inner transoms are provided with openings adapted to receive. the upper ends of the swing iaiigers and ineans above said openings for receiving the nicinhcrs from which the swing hangers ari` suspended.
In testimony whereofwe hereunto alhx oiirsignatiires in the presence of two wit- Y nesses, this 2nd day of December, 1011.
