ELBERT G. CHANDLER, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
CAR-TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.. it?, 119317.,
Application led August 12, 1915. Serial No. 45,085.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBERT Gr. CHANDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city .of Portland, county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to car trucks, and more particularly to certain improvements therein intended to cheapen and at the same time improve and strengthen the construction thereof, and to make possible the use of certain cast steel parts in connection with fiat steel, instead of all fiat steel, as now used.
In order that others may understand my improvement, l have shown its practical embodiment in a car truck, which I will now describe in detail.
Figure l is a side elevation of a car truck embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the portion of the truck embodying my invention- Fig. 3 is a top plan View thereof;
Fig. 4L is a side elevation of a modification of the invention; and
Fig. 5 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring now more in detail to the drawings, the invention consists in providing a combination heel-brace and journal-box column. My combination device in the drawings is designated as a whole, 6, and comprises the guide portion, or journal-box column, 6a, the top portion 6b, the brace portion 6C, with the strengthening web 6d, all cast in one piece, as clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The journal-box column 6, is provided with a bolt hole 6e extending longitudinally therethrough, and is adapted to receive a'bolt 7, for clamping the top plate, or bar, 8, upon said'heel-brace 6, and also the lower plate, or tie-bar, 9, as clearly indicated in Fig. l. It is frequently the case that where the lower strip, or tie-bar, 9, for example, is continued upwardly to the strip, or bar, 8, in the position occupied by the brace-portion 6, of my combination device, and bolted at its upper end to the outer end of the upper bar 8, that said bars are bent downwardly at their outer ends under unusual loa-d, or by some unusual blow, so that the top of the truck is no longer straight but the outer ends are turned downwardly and can not be straightened without `ed together in a way to the necessity of removing them which requires a great deal of work. By providing a one piece cast combination heelebrace and guide, the supporting strength or the outer ends ofthe top bar 8, is materially increased, and the construction is simplified and cheap ened by casting the guide part and the brace as one piece.
In Figs. l and 5, have shown a similar construction in which l have carried the idea a little further, and have included both journal-box columns, with a connecting portion, designated 10, forming a seat for the upper end of the spring l1. ln this construction, as shown in Figs. 4: and 5, the guide columns, designated (itL and 12, are both provided with bolt holes 13-13, extending lengthwise thereof by means of which the top bar 8, and the bottom bar 9, and also the ends of a truss bar lll, are firmly and effectively bolted together with the journal-box, yieldingly seated between the journal-box columns 6a and l2. rlhus have provided a very simple and very prac tical construction in which a cast or one piece-heel-brace can be combined with the usual flat, or arch, bars, the same being boltgive a very simple, practical and economical structure possessing great strength, and also a structure in which any of the parts can be quickly and readily removed and replaced by similar new parts.
I do not limit the invention to the specific form here shown, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims forming a part hereof.
I claim:
l. A combination integral heel-brace and journal-box column for car trucks, comprisino a journal-box column with a bolt hole extending longitudinally therethrough, a horizontal top portion, a brace portion con necting the outer end of said top portion with the lower end of said journal box column, all cast in one piece, said combination heelbrace and journal-box being adapted to be secured in place in said car truck by means of a bolt extended longitudinally through said bolt hole in the journal-box column, substantially as described.
2. ln combination with the top and lower bars and journal-box of a car truck, a combination integral heel-brace and journalbox column, cast in one piece, and comprising a journal-box column portion having a bolt hole formed therein longitudinally thereof, and a triangular frame-like portion formed at one side thereof, said combination heelbrace and journal-box column being secured between said top and lower bars by means of a bolt extended through said top bar, said journal-box coluinn and said lower bar, sub stantially as shown and described.
3. A combination heel-brace and journalboX columns east in one piece and comprising journal-box column portions having bolt holes formed therein longitudinally thereof,
Copies of this patent may be obtained 'for a connecting portion between the upper ends thereof forming a seat and a bracket-lilre portion, all substantially as shown and del5 scribed.
In Witness whereof l have hereunto set my hand at Portland, Multnomah county, Oregon, this 6th day of August, 1915.
ELBERT G. CHANDLER.
