W. STEELE 'AND F. HENDERSON, 0F SISTERSVILLE, WEST VIRGINIA. Letters Patent No. 70,040, dated October 22, 1867 IMPROVED SHANK-LASTER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
le'it known that we, W. STEELE and F. III-:Nmmsomot' Sistersville, Tyler county, West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Machine for Lasting Boots and Shoes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in combining a peculiur-shaped pincer-jaws with an eccentric lever in such a manner that one of the outer ends oi thejnws rest on the curved part of the lever, the end of the'other jaw being fastened tothestraight part; of thelever by a spring, thereby forming a compound leverage. When we wish to draw in the lonther in the shank of a heel: or shoe, we catch the leather on one side of the last with the pincer-jaws, and place the curved part of the lever against the opposite side of the last, as shown by the drawings; then, by pressing down the outer end of the lever, wedraw the leather in to the proper shape and fasten it securely to the last. 'lhe pincer-jaws and lover are then changed to the opposite side of the last, and
operated in the same manner.
The object of our invention is the production of a tool or machine by which we canmore eficctually draw in the leather in what are called the shanks of boots and shoes, thereby making a much neater ant, better fitting hoot or shoe.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a section of the lastpB the pincer-jaws, C the eccentric lever, D the spring which attaches the pincer-jaws to thelerer, and E a post, in the top of which there is an ironpin, which passes into the last, thereby holding it more securely whilst fitting the leather to it.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure liy Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination and arriurgcment of the pincer-jaws or their equivalentwith the eccentric lever, in the manner deseribedand For the purpose set forth.
W. STEELE,
F. HENDERSON. Witnesses A. BARB, W. H. Grunssrnz.
