Description
@uitrit tstrgstmt @Hirn INSTRUMENT FOB. STRETGHING BOOTS AND SHOES LNGTHWISE.
` WILEY JONES, O F NORFLK, VIRGINIA. Letters Patent No. 59,9.12, dated November 20, 1866.
Be it known that I, WILEY Jonas, of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Virginia, have invented an Instrument for Stretching Boots and Shoes lengthwise at the toe; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had"to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication. l
The nature of my invention cons' ts in an iron rod, about half an inch in diameter, and eighteen -inches long; on fteen. inches of which, a. screw thread is cut, and having a straight handle fixed transversely to one end, as shown at A, and formed with a shoulder at the other end, from which the screw is cut, marked B, On this rod works a movable brace, C, which presses against the counter, or back part of the booter shoe,
inside; that part of the surface of the brace which presses against the counter, being provided with teethlike ridges to prevent it from slipping from its position. On the shoulder` formed on said screw, at the end which goes up into the toe of the boot or shoe, is placed a half spherical oblong iron shell or cap, D, when it is desired to make room lengthwise in the toe of the boot or shoe for two or more of the toes of the foot. The larger cap, D, is accompanied .also with a smaller cap, E, which is to ,bez used when it is desired to make room for one toe only. It is manifest that caps of various forms may be used, and that the brace and handle may be madeof other metal; a1so,that a rope, chain; or other device, may be Worked over the brace and` around the heel`on the outside of the boot or shoe, when the counter may betoo weak to bear the pressure. I do not intend to confine myself -to the exact forms or materials mentioned. What I claim as my invention, and desire to 4secure by Letters Patent, is
The above described instrument, or its equivalent, for the purpose of stretching boots and shoes lengthwise at the toe, and thus securing ease and comfort to the wearer, when the boot or shoe is found to be too short or' to cramp the toes of the foot, in the manner and 'for the purpose specified. WILEY JONES.
