IMPROVED MODE OF FINISHING THE SOLES OF BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,394, dated January 26, 1864.
To aZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, J AMES PURIN'roN, Jr., of the city of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Method of Finishing the Soles of Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching, by cement or otherwise, and covering entirely or partially1 the outer surface of the outer sole and heel with paper or other material, as shown by letters A A and B B on the accompanying drawings, and rendering unnecessary several processes now in usesuch as laying the channel, scraping, bufng, finishing the shank, Stethereby saving a large per cent. I
in the cost without injury but with benefit to the quality.
I am aware that gutta-percha, rubber, cloth, &c ,have been used for different purposes upon the outer soles of boots and shoes, but not for the purpose ot' giving a finish or concealing` the stitching, peggin g, or nailing, as described by me.
What I claim, as an article of manufacture, 1s-
A boot and shoe having the stitching, pegging, or nailing in the sole or heel concealed by the use of paper or other material attached and covering partially or entirely the outer surface, as herein described and speoied.
