J.'S; ALLEN & O. GILLM'ORE.
CLAW FOR DRAWING NAILS;
Patented May 14, 1867.

JOSEPH S.- ALLEN AND OGDEN GILLMOR, OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT I Letters Patent No. 64,733, dated May 14, 1867.-
IMPROVEMENT IN GLAWS FOR DRAWING NAILS.-
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownthat we,JOSEPH S; ALLEN and OGDEN Gunmen, both of Norwich, in the county-of New London, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Implements for Drawing Nails; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full,'clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which- -Figure 1 is a side view, showing the implement as applied to a nail preparatory to drawing or pulling the same.
Figure 2 iso side view, showing the implement as employed in drawing the nail;
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
' This invention consists in the combination of a pivoted fulcrum-piece with two griping jaws, formed upon suitable pivoted levers or handles, whereby the implement may be very conveniently operated to firinly'grasp a nail or spike, as the case may be, and draw the same from the wood or other material into which it is driven or embedded.
To enable others to understand the nature and construction of our invention, we will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A and B represent two levers or handles, the ends of which are pivoted together by a transverse pin or pivot, a, and upon the extremity of each of which is formed-a griping jaw, as shown at b, the lowcr extrcmities b of the said jaws being curved inward and made moderately sharp. Inasmuch as the lever A is situated at one side of the lever B, for the purpose of enhancing the simplicity of construction, and consequent cheapness of the-implement, the jaw 11 of'the said lever is formed laterally thereon, in order that it may be placed in proper position opposite the corresponding jaw of the otherlever B. hat part which operates as the Fulcrum of the implement during the operation of the same in drawing nails, is shown at O, and consists of a piece of metal looped or bent into such shape that, while the greater portion thereof extends and is situated below the said levers, as'represented in the drawings, the two ends thereof will be situated one upon each'side of the levers, and pivoted upon the outer or laterally projecting ends of the pivot a, so that the said fulcrum-piece may be turned upon the said pivot, with its lower end at a greater or less distance from the sharp or griping extremities of the jaws b, as may be desired.
In using the implement, the said extremities of the griping jaws b are placed upon opposite sides of the upper end or portion of the nail, (which in the drawings is shown in red outline,) as represented in fig. 1, and the lower end of the fulcrum-piece C is pushed toward the aforesaid jaws 6 until it is brought to the proper or desired distance therefrom, the said fulcrum picce resting upon the board or material from which the nail is to be withdrawn. This being done, the two lovers or handles are pressed together, which of course causes the extremities of the griping jaws b to bite into and firmly grasp the nail between them, whereupon the said levers are forced downward, thus elevating the jaws Z and drawing the nail from the wood or material in which it is embedded; the close or immediate proximity of the fulcrum-piece, upon which the lovers are turned in thus drawing the nail, enabling a very great leverage to be exerted upon the said nail, and in consequence enabling the same to be withdrawn by the exertion of a comparatively moderate degree of force.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the pivoted fulcrum-piece C with the griping jaws formed upon the two lovers A B,
substantially as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
JOSEPH S. ALLEN,
OGDEN GILLMOR.
