Description

(Model.)
7 o. H. TERPANY. TOOL FOR REMOVING BUTTONS FROM SHOES.
No. 244,498. O Patented July 19,1881.
O fmanior:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. TERPANY, OF MARION, OHIO.
TOOL FOR REMOVING BUTTONS FROM SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,498, dated. July 19, 1881.
Application filed March 12, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. TERPANY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Tool for Bemoving Buttons from Shoes, ot'.which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in a tool for the use of shoemakers and dealers.
The object of my improvement is to provide a tool by which buttons fastened with prongs or staples can be easily removed from shoes. I attain this object by the mechanism illustratecl in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is side view, showing the entire tool. Fig. 2 is a side view of the awl and spur as it appears in use for lifting and bending prongs. Fig. 3 is a top view, showing the use of the lip on the side of the tool.
Similar letters refer to similar 1 arts throughout the several views.
The point at A is the under part of the tool. B is the shank of the tool. 0 is the spur or top of the tool. D is the lip, forming a claw or gouge on the side of the tool.
The device atA shows an awl-shaped pointed tool much like a shoemakers sewing-aw], this being used for running under and raising the prongs E by running the point A between the prong E and material of the shoe, the slot between A and O forming a wrench or clutch on the staple or prong fastening it, so it can be raised up or broken off.
The lip l) is to be used in raising the points of prongs as a clutch or gouge when the space underneath the prong is not large-enough to admit the point of the awl A.
The knife and handle, as shown in Fig. l, I make no claim on, but wish to manufacture the tool with or without the knife, making the handle like thisor of wood or metal.
By the use of the above tool the removal of buttons from shoes can be done with ease and dispatch.
I am aware that prior to my invention awls and nails have been used for the purpose of removing buttons from shoes, and do not claim anything on them; but I am not aware of any tool of this kind as a button-remover ever being used for this purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. .A tool for removing buttons from shoes, &c., consisting of the awl-shaped point A and projecting spur 0, all arranged with a suitable shank portion, substantially as shown and described.
2. A tool for removing buttons, consisting of the awl-pointed instrument A, projecting spur O, and side lip, D, all substantially as shown and described.
