0. HIGGINS 8a A. S. GONDIT.
DEVICE FOR DRIVING AND BENDING HEADLESS TACKS.
"zztffnew Patent-ed Mar. 2, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
OLIVER HIGGINS AND ALONZO SMITH OONDIT, OF NAPOLEON, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR DRIVING AND BENDING HEADLESS TACKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,061, dated March 2, 1886.
Application filed September 10, 1884. Serial No. 142,601. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OLIVER HIGGINS and ALONZO SMITH CONDIT, citizens of the United States, residing at Napoleon, Henry county, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Oarpet Fastener and Driver, of'which the following is a specification.
The object of this improvement is a device for driving headless tacks to be driven into the floor near the wall, and for bending the same suitably to make them operate as hooks, to be passed through the carpet and hold the same to the floor, and from which the carpet can be readily disengaged without tearing or otherwise injuring its texture. These results are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings herewith filed as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in the different views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tackdriver and carpet-fastener embodying the features of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation representing a modified construction for the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof more fully illustrating construction. Fig. 4 is a representation of the tack having a point at each end.
A is the tack having points a a at each end.
B is a square or round bar, provided with a longitudinal perforation, O, of less length than the tack A, in order that the latter, which is to be inserted in the perforation G, will project therefrom three-eighths of an inch or more-the distance to which it is to be driven into the floor. E is a transverse perforation or slot in the body of the bar B, and extends through theside of the latter to the longitudinal perforation O, in order to make an entrance thereto for a lip or projection of a spring, D, secured by any suitable means to the side of the bar B.
Fis a transverse perforation extending from the side of the bar B across the longitudinal perforation O, for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
In order touse the device the tack A is inserted as far as it will go into the bar B, when the lip of the spring D will bear against and hold the tack in position during the adjustment of the bar B preparatory to driving the tack, which is done by applying blows of a hammer or other suitable instrument to the end of the bar B. When the tack is driven as farras it will go, the bar B is removed and adjusted to the tack with the latter in the transverse perforation F, and the bar B is then used as a lever to bend the tack toward the wall in a suitable mannerto be passed through the carpet and hold the same.
Having explained the construction and operation of our improvement, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The bar B, provided with the longitudinal perforation 0, slot or perforation E, and spring D, and the transverse perforation F, as and for the purpose set forth.
