INVENTOR franirfWezyel UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK P. WEIGEL, OF FLANDREAU, SOUTH DAKO'I'A.
CLENCHED-NAL STRAIGHTENER.
Application filed March 28, 1917.
To all whom it may concw:
Be it known that I, FRANK P. WEIGEL, residing at Flandreau, in the county of Moody and State of South Dakota, have invented a clenched-Nail Straightener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its purpose to provide a handy tool or implement for carpenters, farmers and mechanics uses in general, of a simple and economical construotion, and which is more especially designed for straightening a clenched nail back into condition for being readily pulled.
Another object of my invention is to provide an attachment for hammers, wrecking bars and the like adapted for straightening clenched nails and pulling the straightened nails, and which, when operatively applied, does not interfere with the regular uses of the hammer, wrecking bar or other like tools.
With other objects in view that will hereinafter appear, my invention consists of an improved tool or implement that embodies the peculiar features of Construction and novel arrangement of parts hereinafter fully explained, specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a conventionalform of claw hammer, with my improvement applied.
Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section of the hammer shown in Fig. 1 and llustrates the manner in which the nail straightener is driven under the clenched end of a nail.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, the hammer with the nail straightener being shown swung up to the nail straightening position.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the claw end of a rocking bar with my improved nail straightening attachment applied for use.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my improved attachment.
This invention, which may be in the nature of a new article, embodying an attachment adapted for being used in connection with different tools, or formed as an integral part of a tool is specially designed for being readily projected under the clenched end of a nail and, when entered under the Specificaton of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
Serial No. 157398.
said clenched end, to serve as a prying lever for bending the clenched end back to a straightened position, whereby to provide for hammering the nail back to cause the head end to be protruded sufticiently to allow the claw end of a hammer, wrecking bar or other like tool to pull the same.
In Figs. l, 2 and 3, I have shown my invention as combined with an ordinary claw hammer and, in the said showing, the attachment, which may' be integrallyformed with a hammer head, is shown as a short tube 1 having one side flattened and tapered as at 2 for seating in a wedge shaped groove that extends near-ly the full width of one side of the handle receiving socket of the hammer head.
In Fig. 2, I have shown the tube 1 as integral with the hammer head and, the said tube 1, has its nail receiving end eX- tended flush with the outer edge of the hammer and the said end beveled to form a chisel-like cutting end 10 to facilitate shifting the said tube 1 down into the plank to work under the clenched nail end.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the drawing, the complete Construction, the manner of using and the advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
While I have shown my invention as especially adapted for use in connection with an ordinary claw hammer and a Wrecking bar, it is understood that the same, with slight modifications, may be readily applied to other types of tools.
What I claim is:
l. An implement comprising a claw shaped head and a handle, a tubular member attached to the said head and projected in the longitudinal plane of the handle and a nail driving member combined with the head and the tubular member.
2. As a new article, a clenched nail straightener consisting of a handle, a claw shaped member and a hammering head at one end thereof, and a tubular member attached to the hammering head and projected in the longitudinal plane of the handle.
FRANK P. WEIGEL.
