EDWARD A. FRANKLIN, OF BRENHAM, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAIL-EXTRACTORS.
,Specification forming part of 4Letters Patent No. 126,686, dated May 14, 1872.
instrument for readily extracting nails, tacks,
brads, Ste., from the matter into which they have been forced, which instrument will increase its effectiveness in equal ratio with the resistance offered by the object under operation. The invention consists in a novel arrangement of levers and claws, as hereinafter more 'fully described.
A in the drawing represents the main leverof the device, having a claw, on, at one and a handle, b, at the other end, and a projecting ear, c, a short distance behind the claw. B is a lever, pivoted to A at d, between the ear c and the point of the claw a. The upper end 'of the lever B connects by a pivot, e, With the rear end of a lever, D, while its lower end has a pad or rough edge, f, to rest on the floor.
iThe lever D has its rear end pivoted at cto the lever B, and its middle at g to the front end of another lever, E, whose rear end is pivoted to the upper end of the ear c. The front end of the lever D forms the second claw h.
When the device is to be used the claw ais placed against the nail to be extracted, the
pad j' resting on the iioor, as in Fig. l. The handle b is then swung down, causing the claw. a to be crowded against the nail and the lever B to be swung nearer vertical, which will so swing the. lever D as to ,bring the claw It against the other side of the nail, as in Fig. 2. The further motion in the same direction of the lever A will elevate the claw a., and still more crowd the claw h against the nail, causing the certain extraction of the latter.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The lnail-extractor, consisting of the levers A, B, D, and E, all arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
