Description

(No Mode 1) E. T. COOK BOOT AND SHOE BOX. 'Nn. 288,924. Patented Nov. 20, 1883.
INV TOR WITN ESSES UNITED STATES ATENT EMMANUEL THOMAS COOK, OF ALEXANDER, TEXAS, ASSIGNOB OF ONE- HALF TO D. R. BURROUGHS, OF SAME PLACE.
BOOT AND SHOE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,924, dated November 20, 1883.
Application filed August 22,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. T. COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexander, in the county of Erath and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view with part of the counter cut away. Fig. 2 is a side view, the counter cut away. Fig. 3 is a modification of the invention, and is a side view.
This invention has relation to boot and shoe boxes for merchants use in boot and shoe stores and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly point ed out in the claims appended.
The improved shoe-boxes are to be arranged beneath the counter, between guide-strips upon the floor, and mounted on wheels, and provided with mechanism connected to the hinged lids of the boxes to raise the lid as the box is pulled out, and to close it when the box is pushed back to place again. This may be accomplished in several ways, two of which I have shown and will describe herein.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, adesignatesthe counter; 22, the floor, and o the guide-strips, secured to the floor beneat-h the counter.
d designates a rectangular box, of suitable size for the purpose for which it is intended,
which is mounted on rollers e, and is provided with a lid, f, to the rear end of the box. A handle, 9, is provided at the front of the box,
by which to pull it. out from beneath the coun ter. A hanger, h, is hinged to the under side of the top of the counter, near the front edge thereof, and inclines downwardly and rearwardly, and is connected at the lower ends of its arms to the edges of the box-1i d at points between the middle and the back end of the same. Toggle-arms i i are also connected to the arms of the hanger h, and to the sides of the box, to prevent the box from being pulled too far out, and also to prevent the lid from being raised too high. When the box is pulled out, the lid will rise, and when the box is pushed back to place the lid will be closed by the hanger. A modification of the hanger It consists of two wooden arms pivoted in recesses in the guidestrips and pivoted at their upper ends to the edges of the box'lid, as shown. These arms operate the lid, as before described for the hanger.
This device is simple, easily worked, and is far more convenient than the old method of storing boots and shoes for the retail trade.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The boot and shoe box mounted on rollers and having a lid hinged at one end to the box, in combination with the hanger hinged to the counter and pivoted to the edges of the box-lid, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the boot and shoe box having the hinged lid with the hanger hinged to the counter and connected to the lid,
and the toggle-arms connecting the arms of the hanger and the sides of the box, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EllhllAhllEL THOMAS COOK.
Witnesses;
W. H. Ronenns, IV. R. Pnnrr'r.
