Description
FIQEt PATENT PHILIP BOSCHE, OF NEW PHILADELPHIA, OHIO.
BUGGY BOOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 382,349, dated May 8, 1888. Application'filed March 17, 1888. Serial. No. 267,563. (No model.)
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP Bosorrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Philadelphia, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buggy-Boots; and I do.
hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the boot closed and a portion of the cover broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a portion of a vehiclebody, showing the bootframe attached and elevated. Fig. 3 is an under side view of portions of the boot-frame and its cover. Fig. 4 is a detached longitudinal section of the spring-hinge.
The presentinvention has relation to buggyboots; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts, hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents "the body of a buggy, which may be of the form shown, or it may be of any other desired form.
The frame B is substantially of the form shown in Fig. 1, and is so adjusted that it will fit the top or upper edge of the rear portion of the body A. This frame B is properly strengthened by means of the corner irons a, and, if desired, iron strips may be placed upon the inner edges of the frame B. The frame B is hinged to the rear of the seat-frame or support 0, and, for the purpose a of removing the frame B, together with its different parts, one of the connecting-bolts is provided with a spring, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
To the inner edges of the frame B are pivotally attached the bars D, which bars extend forward through the staples or hooksb, as shown in Fig. 1. These bars D extend backward to within a short distance of the rear end of theframe B, and are so adjusted that they can be operated'as hereinafter described.
To the frame B are attached the spring plates 0, which are located over the rear ends of thebarsD and are for the purpose of protecting the cover d. For the purpose of preventing the rear ends of the bars D passing up above the frame B the lips or extensions d are provided, which strike against the bottom or under side of the frame B. To the bars D are attached the front or forward ends of the helical springs E, the opposite ends being attached to the frame 13, and are for the purpose of holding the frame B ,together with its cover, either up or down.
In use, when it is desired to open or elevate the frame B, the rear ends of the bars D are pressed downward, thereby elevating the front or forward ends of said bars and disengaging the notches e from the staples or hooks b, when said frame is free to be opened and will be automatically locked or held in an open position by means of the notches f, engaging the staples or hooks b. When it is the bars D are pressed downward, thereby elevating the front or forward ends of said loars and disengaging the notches ffrom the staples or hooks b, when it is free to be closed, the notches e engaging the staples or hooks b and automatically locking the frame 13 in a closed position. It will be seen that the springs E will securely hold the frame B to thetop of the buggy-body A, thus preventing said frame from rattling. The spring hingebar Fis provided with the downwardly-extending handle or knob g, which is for the purpose of operating said bar F when it is desired to attach or remove the frame B.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the body A, the frame B, provided with the pivoted bars D, the springs E, and means for automatically locking the frame B either up or down, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The frame B, provided with the bars D and spring-plates c,t-he springs E, and means for automatically locking the frame B either up or down, substantially-as and for the pur- In testimony that I claim the above I have pose specified. hereunto subscribed my name in the presence 3. The combination of the hinged frame B, of two witnesses. the bars D,provided with the lips or extensions PHILIP BOSOHE. 5 d, the notches e and f, and the staples or Witnesses: hooks b, substantially as and for the purpose E. A. 0. SMITH,
set forth. 7 FRED W. BOND.
