SHOW-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1910.
Application filed September 24, 1909. Serial N 0. 519,405.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID A. HUFFMAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show-Cases of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to store furniture and refers particularly to an improved show case.
An object of this invention is to form. a case of this character which may be employed particularly to housing cheese, or the like, as the same is constructed to open the front and top in one operation.
The invention further contemplates a novel means for connecting a front panel, which is hinged to the body of the case, to a hinged cover so that upon the drawing forward of the panel the cover will be raised simultaneously therewith and caused to completely open the case to display the goods deposited therein, and to admit of ready access thereto.
The further object of this invention is to provide a case of this character which is of simple formation and which comprises but few working parts so as to effect a show case which may be readily handled and adapted for various uses.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a transverse section through the improved case in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a view of the same disclosing the case in an open position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the case, the same being reduced. Fig. 1 is a top plan view of one end of the case having the cover removed therefrom, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section through a modified form of the case.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 designates a base which is of substantially rectangular formation, although any form preferred may be employed, and which 18 provided adjacent its opposite ends with side panels 11 and 12 and a back 13. The panels 11 and 12 and back 13 preferably comprise rectangular frames which support panes of glass or a like transparent substance to disclose the contents of the case. Front edge of the base 10 supports a front panel 14 which is hingedly disposed along its lower edge to the base 10 and which is adapted to be swung upwardly into engagement with the forward edges of the side panels 11 and 12. Spaced inwardly from the side panels 11 and 12 are transverse bars 15 which form spaces for the reception of levers 16 which are pivotally disposed between the panels 11 and 12 and the transverse bars 15 and are adapted to normally lie in parallel with the upper edges of the same. The rear end of each of the levers 16 is provided with an arm 17 which is depended from the same and which is formed with a suitable eye for the reception of a cord 18. The cord 18 is extended from the arm 17 forwardly beneath the lever 16 and is passed over a pulley 19 carried against the inner face of the adjacent side panel. The cord 18 at its forward end is secured to the upper portion of the front hinged panel 1 1. The forward end of the lever is slightly rounded as is disclosed at 20 and is adapted for engagement against the under side of the cover 21 of the case which is hingedly disposed at its rear edge to the back 13. Each end of the case is provided with a cord 18, the forward ends of which are secured to the upper portion of the hinged panel 14 and are thereby connected to the levers 16.
From Fig. 8 of the drawing it will be noted that the levers 16 are positioned immediately beneath the cover 21 and that therefore, upon the swinging of the levers 16 about their pivot points, the ends of the same will engage against the under face of the cover 21 and tend to raise the cover into.
an open position.
In Fig. 5 a slight modification of the device is disclosed in which the connecting means between the arm 22 carried by the lever 28 and the forward hinged panel 24 comprises a metallic strap 25 which is extended between the same and is pivotally connected thereto. A suitable hand-grasp 26 is mounted upon the forward panel 14 for the purpose of admitting of the drawing of the same outwardly and downwardly.
In the operation of the device when it is desired to gain access to the case the operator grasps the handle 26 and draws the panel 1 1 outwardly and downwardly. This action draws the cords 18 over the pulleys 19 and causes the swinging of the levers 16. As the cords are connected to the lower ends of the arms 17, the rear extremities of the levers 16 are drawn downwardly and impinge the forward rounded ends 20 of the levers 16 against the under face of the cover 21, thereby raising the same into an open position. For the purpose of limiting the backward movement of the cover 21 a stop 27 is employed which is secured upon the back 13 of the case and extended slightly above the same where it is curved forwardly for engagement against the upper face of the cover 21.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A. case including a base, a back mounted on said base, ends mounted on said base, cross-bars carried by said ends and spaced inwardly therefrom, levers pivotally disposed between said ends and said cross-bars, arms depended from the rear ends of said levers, a hinged .panel mounted upon the forward edge of said base, connections disposed between said arms and said panel and a cover hingedly disposed upon said back for engagement with said levers to raise said cover.
2. A case including a body portion, a
cover hingedly disposed on said body portion, a pair of levers pivotally mounted in said body portion for engagement against the under face of said cover, arms depended from said levers for swinging the same, cords extended from said arms, pulleys carried by said. body portion for supporting said cords and the forward end of said body portion and a hinged panel disposed upon said body portion and connected to the for ward ends of said cords.
3. A case including a body portion, a panel hingedly disposed in the front of said body portion to swing outwardly and downwardly, a hinged cover mounted on said body portion, and a pair of levers pivotally supported at their central portions at the ends of said body portion, the rear ends of said levers being connected to said panel to be swung downwardly and forwardly thereby, the forward ends of said levers being adapted to swing upwardly and backwardly against said cover.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
