IMPLEMENT FOR EXTRACTING NAILS OR TACKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,679, dated December 14, 1897.

Be it known that I, EDWARD W. PRATT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Menominee, in the county of Menominee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements for Extracting Nails or Tacks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in implements for extracting nails or tacks, the

- object being to provide a device which is simple in its construction, convenient to handle, and one which will expeditiously accomplish the purpose intended.

With these ends in view my invention consists in certain novel features and organizations, the details and operation of which will be set forth in the claim hereinafter.

' In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is top plan view.

Referring by letters to the drawings, A designates theshank of the implement, having secured to one end a handle B, the other end being somewhat curved off the line of center and flattened, having its points slightly curved up and provided with a notch or claw O. In the center of the said flattened portion is a longitudinal slot D, having pivotally secured in the upper end thereof or the end nearest the handle by the rivet E, which engages the perforations F F, a curvilinear gripping-jaw G, provided with a claw H, and approximately near the center of the said gripping-jaw is secured a curved fulcrum I, which projects down through the slot in the said flattened portion and is adapted to rest upon the article from which the tack or nail is to be drawn. Mounted upon this curved fulcrum is a coil-sprin g J, interposed between the flattened portion and the gripping-jaws for the purpose of supporting the said gripping-jaw in an open or normal position.

It will thus be seen that I provide a device which will easily extract either nails or tacks, whet-her driven their full length or only part way.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my device will be obvious and further description is deemed unnecessary.

I claim- In a nail or tack extractor the combination of a shank having a handle on one end, the other end being flattened and curved off the line of center, the end of which is curved up and provided with a claw, a longitudinal slot in the said flattened portion, a curvilinear gripping-jaw secured within the upper end of the said slot, having a claw in the free end thereof, and provided with a curved fulcrum secured to its center the said fulcrum projecting down through the said slot, having a coil-spring mounted thereupon, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
