Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EFICE.
CARL A. LINDNER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVED CARPET-STRETCHER.
Specification forming` part of Letters Patent No. 58.653., dated October 9, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL A. LINDNER, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Carpet-Stretcher, and I hereby declare the following to bea full, clear. and exact description thereof, reti erenee 'being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device for the ready prehension and stretchii'igj)I of the edge ot' a carpet in order to make it cover the iioor ot' a room.
A is a hand-spike or lever, terminating,` in a point, a., to engage in the ioor and thus afford a fulcrum of operation.
B is a grapnel composed of two serrated jaws, C C', united by a pivot-bolt, D, and terminating rearward in diverging shanks c c.
E is a sliding yoke, whose apertures e c receiveeach one ot' the shanks c c. From the middle of the yoke E proceeds a chain, F, which connects said yoke with the hand-spike A.
Operation: The edge of the carpet being caught between the jaws C C' of the grapnel B, the point ofthe hand-spike is made to penetrate the Hoor sufficiently fora l ite, and the hand-spike is then vibrated forward, so as to draw or stretch the carpet with a leverage power equivalent to the ratio which the entire length ofthe lever bears to that part of itbelow the chain.
I have selected as the preferred type of my invention a form of grapnel having the represented d iverging` Shanks and slidingl yoke; but an inferior modification may have in place of the yoke and chain two links pivoted to the Shanks and to a common point of attachment on the lever.
I claim herein as new and ot' my invention-d The carpet-stretcher composed ot' the handspike A and `grapnel B, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand. 4
CARL A. LINDNER.
