IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCHERS.

Be it known that I, ALVAN S. RionlinDs, of the countyof Montgomery, and iu-the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet-Stretchers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference' being had to the'accompanying drawing making a part of this'spccitication, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the upper' side of my device, and

My invention is designed to render more easy the' operation of putting down carpets; and
It consists of a lever of the first order, pivoted to or upon a movable fulcrum, and having pivoted to its outer end a suitable claw for seizing or engaging with theedge of the carpet, as is hereinafter set forth.

As thus constructed, the device is complete and. is operated as follows:

In order to permit of the more ready insertion of tacks within the carpet a V-shaped opening, b, is provided within the vouter edge ofthe claw B, which, as shown inthe drawing, is'short; but if' desired, the' edge of the claw may be extended'so as to embrace more of the carpet, und contain t-'wo or more of said openings.
Having thus fully set forth. the nature and merits of my invention,
'What I claim as new is- The hereinbefore-described carpet-stretcher, consisting of the lever A, provided with the stud a, the claw B, and the pivoted fulcrum-bar G, provided with the stud c, substantially as shoivn.
