Be it known that I, HENRY Rose, of Fay.

ette, Howard county, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic- Staplellastening' Devices, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.

This invention consists in a setting implement for use in connection with metallic staples, substantially as hereinafter described, for closing or securing seams in boots-and shoes, in bags of leather, cloth, or other material, in pantaloons and overalls, in fastening straps of leather, cloth, paper, on similar or other materials, also in securing rips in seams of boots or shoes, and for other purposes.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which;similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents a partially sectional side view of the setting implementwith a metallic staple in its place therein, also show ing two pieces of material in position for be ing secured by the staple, all in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is'a transverse section of the same on the line :0 a; in Fig.1; Fig. 3, a top View of the implement, and Fig. 4c a sectional view of two-pieces of material as united by the staple.

The setting implement resembles, in its general construction, a pair of tongs or pliers, being composed of two crossing links, A A, pivoted together, at b, and the rear portions of which form handles, while the for ward portions are constructed to form jaws a a. The under or acting face portion of the upper or one jaw, a, has a dovetail groove,'b, cut in it for the reception and retention of the metallic staple or fastening B, which is of tapering construction, with its back that is seated within the groove I) made to arch inward for the purpose of bringing the pressure when the setting implement is closed more upon the raised ends of the staple than on its center. After the implement holding the metallic staple Bin its jaw a, as described, has been properly adjusted to the work, with the seamed portions of the goods, or two pieces, 0 O, of the material or materials to be united, arranged over the other jaw, a, the implement is manipulated to close the jaws, causing the points of. the staple to be projected through the two pieces of material and into the grooves in the jaw a, and so that the continued closing of the jaws will cause the pointed end portions of the staple to be first bent inward or toward each other and afterward upward into the material, thereby securely fastening the goods, as shown in Fig. 4. The recess or grooves in the jaw a are of suitable hollow, rounded, or shelving shape in transverse section, to insure the legs or pointed portions of the staples being thus bent inward and upward by the action of the implement. After the staple has been thus set or closed, and the seam or goods secured, the implement is drawn slightly to one side, which detaches it from the staple. If necessary to secure the pressing of the staple still closer to its place in and on the goods, the setting implement may be closed again on the staple.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 9 as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t In a staple-setting instrument, the levers A A, one having a jaw, a, provided with parallel concaved grooves or channels 0, and the other lever having a jaw, a, provided with a holding-groove, b, of dovetail construction to receive and effect the retention therein of the fastening device or staple, the instrument being withdrawn from the staple laterally after the securing of the latter to the article, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
