BUTTON-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4,1916.
Application filed January 17, 1914. Serial No. 812,820.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. DAHLGREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bethune, in the county of Kershaw and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to stapling tools, and particularly to that class of tools designed for securing shoe fasteners to the uppers of shoes.
7 An object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character which will be designed for; use in applying fasteners of a particular type and embodying a plurality of securing spurs that are adapted to be extended through the material of the uppers and to be subsequently clenched against the material at the back thereof on manipulating the implement.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tool ofth s character wherein one of the clamping plates'or portions thereof will be designed to initially accommodate the spurs on the operation of securing the fastener upon the shoe and before upsetting the spurs.
With these and other objects in view, the invention cons'sts of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-F igure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig 2 is a plan view of one member thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan view of another member thereof; Fig. 4 is a section through a portion of a shoe. showing the manner of initially connecting the fastener thereto; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fastener; and Fig. 6 is a s'milar view, showing another form of fastener.
The tool herein shown is described as essentially important to a proper application to a shoe of such form of fastener as shown at A in Fig. 4 and in Fig. 5 in detail. The fastener is formed from a single blank of material having a rectangular body 2 provided at its corners with substantially V-spurs C which extend at right angles to the direction of the body of the plate and which are adaptedto be extended through the material of the shoe as shown in Fig. 4: and to be subsequently upset against the back of the material in a manner to be hereinafter fully explained.
At the center the body of the fastener is provided with a single aperture D and extending therethrough is a loop E, which is adapted to be connected in the eye F of an ordinary button G., In order to accommodate the parts of the fastener herein specifically referred to to effect a secure application of the fastener to the material of the shoe I construct the stapling device of companion members 1 and 2, the former having a substantially rectangular plate 3 of a configuration conforming somewhat to that of the body of the fastener and of a size slightly exceeding the same. From one side of the plate 3 of the member 1 is extended a shank The other member 2' of the stapling de-* Vice is provided with'a plate 8 of a size preferably co-extensive with that of the plate 3 of the member 1 and adjacent to the corners and within the boundary of the body of the fastener said plate 8 is provided with rectangular slots 9. From one side of the plate is extended the shank 10 which terminates in a handle 11 similar to the handle 5. The width of the handle 11 is such that it may be extended through the slot 6, while the width of the shank 10 is of a size whereby it may be occupied in the branch 7 of said slot 6 after the member 2 is twisted at right angles to that position which it initially occupies when extending the handle 11 through the slot 6. In this manner the branch 7 serves to receive the shank 10 of the member 2, whereby the two members are free for pivotal movements relatively and the plates 3 and 8 of both members are c0 actively associated whereby they may be advanced with proper pressure against the opposite sides of the body of the fastener and cause the latter to be securelyconnected with the material, as will be understood. The plate 3 of the member 1 of the device is provided with a slot 12 having its'closed end 13 disposed near the center of the plate.
In describing the use of the device, it is said that the fastener A is initially placed against that portion of the shoe to which the fastener is to be permanently connected. The spurs C are then driven through the material of the shoe as shown in Fig. 4. After thus arranging the fastener upon the shoe, the stapling device is controlled by the hand and the plates 8 and 8 are made to lie respectively at the opposite sides of the material of the shoe. The loop E is extended into the slot 12 until it engages the closed end 13 of said slot. The spurs C of the body of the fastener are then properly positioned relatively of the slots 9 of the plate 8 and both plates are then advanced toward each other by applying pressure to the handles 5 and 11. The plate is then secured to the material of the shoe in a manner that will warrant a final upsetting of the terminals of the spurs G against the back of the shoe. The staple, with a button thereon, is placed immediately under the plate 3 with the button and member E extending through the slot 12, the shoe upper or part to which the button is to be fastened then being placed upon the member 8 and the handles 5 and 11 brought together, whereupon the staple points will be forced through the leather and through the holes 9. The tool then being opened and the upper slid forward slightly, the jaws can be again closed and the staples will be clenched. 7
Another form of fastener which may be fastened to a shoe by means of my improved tool is shown in Fig. 6 and comprises a base having integral spurs C and also having, projecting from the opposite side, at the center, a shank H and a button head I.
I claim The herein described stapling vtool com prising a pair of members each having a plate forming a j aw and a handle shank extending from one side of the plate, the plate of one member being provided with openings near its corners, the plate of the other member being provided with a slot which extends from near its center to its outer side, the shank of the last named-member having an offset portion and being provided with a T-shaped slot, the head of which is located transversely in said offset p0rtion,'the shank of. the first named member extendingthrough the head of said slot and co-acting therewith and with said olfset portion of the first named member to detachably'pivotally connect said members together and with their shanks in crossed relation, the length of the branch of the T-shaped' slot being such as to enable the shank of the firstnamed member to be initially inserted- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing thev Commissioner of latents 7 Washington, D. C.
