BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,853, dated May 30, 1882.

Application filed February 20, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENo Frsonnn, a subject of the Emperor of Germany,-residing at Stuttgart, Kingdom of Wiirtemberg, Empire of Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of buttons which are provided with a pair of serrated 1o jaws adapted to be clamped upon the sides of a garment at its edge, and to thereby secure the button in place without sewing and without forminga hole through the fabric for the button-shank.

Prior to this invention a metal-plate has been struck up with inclined teeth and bent at its middle, so as to form a pair of jaws.x A button has been secured directly to one of these jaws near the bend in the plate, and this buttonfastening device has been attached to the garment by forcing the teeth into engagement with the fabric. In another instance a buttonfastening has been composed of a pair of serrated hinged jaws and a beveled clampingplate carrying the button pivoted to the shank of one jaw, so that by bringing the clampingplate parallel with and over the jaws the upper jaw will be moved toward the lower jaw, upon the shank of which latter jaw the said plate is 0 pivoted. According to myinvention, however,

'1 pass a screw through both of the serrated spring-jaws that are formed by bending a metal plate at its middle, and upon this screw I arrange the button, so that by turning down the button upon the screw it can be brought to bear upon one of the jaws and hence bring the spring-jaws together.

The letter a indicates the button, which is formed with a central screw-threaded socket or perforation, in which the screw bis received. The spring-jaws c c are serrated or notched on their inner faces, and are formed by bending a metal plate at its middle. The screw 7) passes through these SI'HiIIg-ja-WS HGEH the bend in the metal plate, so that the head of the screw bears against the outer face ofone of thejaws. The portion ofthis screw which passes through a suitable perforation in each jaw is unthreaded, while its end which extends out from the jaws is screw-threaded, so as to fit the screw-threaded socket in the button and form a shank for the latter. By inserting the material to which the button is to be applied between these spring serrated jaws, and then turning down the button upon the screw, the jaws will be clamped upon the article, and thus hold the button in place. ny unscrewing the button the jaws will spring apart, and the fastening can be detached from the garment to enable it to be washed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with a button provided with a screw-threaded socket, ot' the pair of serrated jaws, and the screw-threaded buttonshank passing through said jaws and received in the screw-threaded socket of the but-ton, whereby by turning down the latter upon its shank the jaws will be forced together, substantially as described.
