Description
(No Model.) t V P. H. SWEE'T, Jr. BUTTON FASTENER.
Patented Dec. 11,
WITNESSES:
, ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PARKER H. SWEET, JR, OF WASHINGTON, D. (1, ASSIGNOR TO THE HEATON BUTTON FASTENER COMPANY, OF PROVIDENGE, R. I.
BUTTON-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,139, dated December 11, 1883.
Application filed January 24, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PARKER H. SWEET, J r.,
a citizen of the United :States, residing at Washington, in the'District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part. .of this specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in that class of metallic button fasteners or connections in which the loop portion 'of the same is passed up through a single hole in a fabric to receive the shank of a button and secure it thereto; and my improvements consist of a fastener of novel construction, having a retaining base-plate provided with a loop portion of peculiar form,,-which is adapted to be inserted through a single hole in a fabric or material, and after the shank of the button is attached thereto the said loop portion is bent up at right angles to the retaining base-plate to secure the parts together, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved fastener; Fig. 2, a similar view of the same as connected to a fabric; Fig. 3, a like view as attached to a button and fabric; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 5a detail View of a device for securing the fastener to the. button and fabric.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the metallic fastener or connection, which is preferably cut from metal sheets in such a manner as to provide a rounded or other suitableshaped base or retaining-plate, a,ha-ving aloop portion, 12, extending therefrom and formed partly out of said plate or base, as shown. This loop portion b is first bent up, for apart of its length, at right angles to the base a, and 50 then bent downward again in a plane parallel to the upper surface of the said base, the
free end of the loop being provided with a projection, 0, as fully shown in the drawings.
In place, however, of forming my improved fastener from blanks cut from metallic sheets, I may form the same from wire, with a View to its being produced at a much less cost, and such change or modification is hereby contemplated by me.
In the operation of attaching a button to ,60 a fabric by my improved fastener, a suitable hole is made in the fabric or material by a sharp-pointed instrument, and the end 0 of the loop I) inserted up through the same, and the base a turned around until the loop portion rests upon the upper surface of the fabric, as fully shown in'Fig. 2.- The shank of the button is then passed over the end 0 into the loop Z), and, by means of a small pair of pliers or the forked end of the device shown at Fig. 5, the said loop I) is bent up at right angles to the surface of the fabric and baseplate, as fully shown in Figs. 3 and 4, thereby securely clamping the fabric or material between the projecting end 0 of the loop b and 7 5 i the base-plate a, and also connecting the button to the fabric. To remove the button, the loop b must again be bent down to its former position upon the surface of the fabric, to allow of the shank being slipped over the pro" jection c.- a
The fastener thus constructed forms a most simple and efficient means for attaching buttons to any desired material in a short time, and which can be removed or replaced at pleasure. V 7 Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is-- v The herein;described button-fastener, consisting of the base-plate a and loop portion 0 I), having projecting end 0, all formed from a single piece of metal, and the loop portion of said fastener being bent so as to project in a line parallel with said base, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified. 5
In testimony whereof I affixmy signature in presence of two witnesses. I
PARKER, H. SWEET, JR.
