' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK HQFARNSWORTH, ()F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE BELLE PATENT BUTTON FASTENER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
INSTRUMENT FOR SETTING BUTTONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,307, dated April 11, 1882.
Application filed January 26, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: .7
Be it known that I, FRANK H. FARNSWORTH, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Setting-Instruments forAttaching Buttons to Garments; and I hereby declare that the following is a ful],clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part to of this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the 0011- struction of instruments for attaching buttons to garments, and is especially designed as an 1 improvement upon Letters PatentNo:247,032, issued September 13, 1881, to myself and Arthur J. Barnes. 7
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts of the de- 2o vice, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a perspective view. central longitudinal section; and-Fig. 3, a rear view of the jaw A, with the spring detached and a button represented in position by'dotted lines. i a I In the accompanying drawings, A B represent the two jaws of the instrument provided with the handlesG D, operated in the usual manner, the upper jaw, A, being somewhat the 0 shorter of the two.
To the inner face of the jaw A, I secure a plate,-E, which is provided with the small outwardly-projecting lip'a, the underfa-ce of which is recessed, as shown. The upper face of the 5 jaw A is recessed, as at b, and is provided with a leaf-spring, F, which projects beyond Fig. 2 is the toe of the jaw, the above construct-ion being the same as that described in the beforementioned Letters Patent.
To the inner face of the jaw A, I secure a 40 spring, G, the free end of which is forked, as shown, and in this forked spring and in relation with the other features of the device lies the gist of this invention.
In practice the head of the button is inserted in the recess 1) beneath the spring F, with the lip a. projecting through the eye of the button, as shown in Fig. 2, the recess 1) being sufficiently large to receive the body ofthe button in the same manner as in my previous patent, already referred to. A proper tack, d, with a malleable point, is then inserted through the material to which the button is to be attached, audit is then inserted between the jaws and-beneath the spring G, the head of the tack resting upon the inner flat face of thejaw B, the point of the tack extending up through the forked end of the said spring G, which, in compressing the jaws, compels the point of the tack to come in contact with the lip a, and is forced through the eye of the button and clinched, thus securing the button to place.
What I claim as my invention is- In an instrument for attaching buttons, and in combination with thejaws and spring F, the forked spring G, arranged and adapted to serve as and for the purposes specified.
