SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,886, dated August 10,1886.
Application filed December 2, 1885. Serial No. 184,468. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT B. BEACH, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoe-Pinehers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to that class of pinchers used for lasting boots. and shoes; and the object ofthe invention is to provide pinchers that can be used with great facility at all parts of the upper, particularly at the waist or shank of the last. At present several pairs of pinchers are required to last a boot or shoe; but my pinchers are constructed for application to any and all parts of the last and upper, so only the single tool is required to properly last a boot or shoe.
My invention consists of a pair of pinchers having a curved fulcrum-knob or projection formed rigidly with one of the jaws of the pinchers.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the method of using my new pinchers at the waist or shank of a last, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the pinchers.
A B represent the cross-pivoted members of the tool pivoted upon a headed bolt, 0, The jaws a I) of the members A B are curved and serrated upon their inner surfaces, as shown at a I), the same as the ordinary old-style shoe-pinchers. The jaw I) is formed with the fulcrum-shank d. This is headed, as shown at (1, to form a striker, and the shank and head are curved upon the front edge, as shown at d", so that the shank is adapted to fulcrum the pinohers on the side of the last at the waist thereof, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The edge (1 being curved, the fulcrum of the tool will shift of its own accord in the line with the direction of the pull, and the fulcrum may be carried so low that the upper will be drawn fiat upon the last, which is necessary to properly place the upper. The head at is made square at (1 so it may be used as a striker or to fulcrum the pinchers at the ball, toe, and heel of the last. The face of the head (I is serrated or roughened, so that a firmer hold may be obtained on the leather, and slipping be prevented.
By this construction of the pinchersthe whole upper may be lasted with the same tool, and in lasting at the shank it is especially convenient, as the tool takes its own fulcrum and slides downward to pressure on the handles, and draws the upper snugly over and against the last.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a shoe-makers pinchers having two pivoted 1evers terminating in curved jaws, the outer face of the lower jaw being formed with a shank, d, having a head curved at (F, and serrated or roughened at d, substantially as set forth.
ROBERT B. BEACH.
