To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ADDIsoN K. CHASE, of Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough, State of New Hampshire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cobblers Lasts, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and :o use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of myimproved last; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same with the '5 shanks removed;v Fig. 3, a bottom plan View of one of the shank portions detached, and Figs. 4 and 5 sectional views illustrating details of construction.l

My invention relates to lasts which are especially adapted for use in repairing boots and shoes; and it consists in certain novel features, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more efective device ofr this character than is now in ordinary use.

The nature and operation of the improve- 3o ment will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation- In the drawings, A represents the body of the last, and B C the shank portions. The body of the last is composed of metal, and

consists of two foot portions b d, facing outward in opposite Adirections and connected by a curved central portion f. The foot portion d is of smaller size than the foot b. A horizontal socket g is form ed at the rear of each foot portion, said sockets having inwardlyconverging walls h. The shanks B C are also constructed of metal, and each consists of a body portion c', the bottom or face le of which is curved to form the shank and heel of the last. The forward end Z of the shank-pieces has its edges beveled to t the sockets g. A vertical arm or standard m is secured to the heel portion of each shank-piece, the outer 5o ends q of said arms being reduced or wedgeshaped. Each foot portion is provided centrally with a lon gitudinally-arranged vertical slot p, which extends through the foot portion and into the sockets, and is adapted to receive the ends q of the standards fm. The body@ of the shank-piece B is constructed smaller than the body of the shank-piece C to correspond with the foot-piece d.

In the use of my improvement ashankpiece B or C is disposed in the heel of the boot or shoe to be repaired and the corresponding foot-piece inserted in position therein, the end l of the shank falling into the socket g and the end q of its arm inserted in the slot p of the opposite foot-piece. As said end is wedge-shaped, a slight blow will cause it to bind in the slot and prevent the parts from slipping while the tap is being attached. The sides of the body A being curved, as shown, they can, be readily held upon the 7o knee while in use in the shoe. The foot portions b d and corresponding shank-pieces being constructed of different sizes, it will readily be seen that by use of the elongated slots p the shank-pieces can be so adjusted in the sockets as to enable the last to be employed in shoes varying greatly in size, the last shown being found in practice to take the place of thirty sizes of cobbling-lasts in ordinary use.

In Figs. 4 and 5 a modification is shown in the formation of the slot p and arm end q, the edges thereof being corrugated to prevent the shank-pieces from slipping when the sole is hammered upon. I do not, however, deem the corrugations essential, as the wedgeshaped end serves the purpose.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- A reversible last-body having two sole portions of different sizes facing in opposite directions, horizontal flaring sockets in the sole portions, and longitudinal rectangular slots extending through said body from the bottoms of said sockets, in combination with ad- 95 instable shanks adapted to fit said horizontal sockets and provided with vertical arms having wedge-shaped ends for projecting into said rectangular slots, substantially as described.
