Description

@einen ltatrs ateat @ffrm IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
dln Stlnhulctrfunt in in ilpsc fcttas ntrnt mit' making :grat at tige sulla.
To ALL Wnon IT MAY eoNoERN:
'Be it known that I, LAWRENCE RHOADI-s, of Newport, Newport county, Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledI in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partV of this specification.
'lhis invention relates to an improvement in buckles, and consists in hanging a second or supplementary loop within the ordinary loop, whereby the ordinary prong is dispensed with, and consequent injury to the matcrial avoided.
My improved buckle may be either double or single. In the latter case it should be sewn to the material. When double, it may be secured by folding the material around the supplementary loop and jamming it in the main loop. In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a plan, and i Figure 2 a section of my improved buckle.
Similar letters ot-- reference indicate corresponding part-s.
A A is the loop, in which the supplementary loops B I3 are pivoted at l), so that when they are turned they shall strike against the frame of loop A, and not pass through it. The material or strap C, being passed under A and B, is turned over B, and again under A, the end I) hanging loose. By pulling on D, C is draw-n through e the buckle, but bypnlling on C, B is jammed againstV A, `confining the strap or material. The buckle may be i formed and material secured, as shown in the drawing, or the buckle may be single, having only one supplew. mentary loop so arranged that it shall not pass through the buckle, and bc sewn to the material at one end', the
strap being passed under A and B, then over B and under A, as before.
The buckle, with a single supplement-ary loop, and sewn at one end tothe material, is specially applicable for use as a glove-fastener.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, as far as itis now perfected, is-
A... The buckle A A, when provided with the supplementary loops B B, pivoted at 6 in each end thereof, opening outwardly and upon the sides of the buckle in such a manner that the strain upon the end C of the strap presses it4 against the sides of the frame, and the strain upon the ends D release it, as herein set forth, for the purpose specied.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 29th day of April, 1867.
LAWRENCE RHOADES.
