Nrr Aras IRA I. NEWFIELD, OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
FOLLOWER FOR PACKING SAUER-KRAUT, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 691,479, dated January 21, 1902.
Application mea August 29, 1901.
T0 LU whom. it mtl/,y concern:
Be it known that I, IRA I. NEWFIELD,a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Followers for Packing Sauer- Kraut, dsc.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in followers or devices adapted to hold sauer-krant or other articles under pressure in a barrel or otherV receptacle; and it consists in the provision of a block on which is mounted a springactuated member, to which are pivoted arms having pointed ends made of metal or other suitable material, said member, with thearms attached, beingadapted to be normally held so that the points of said arms will engage the inner circumference of a barrel or other receptacle, the force of the spring being to throw said arms outward and to hold the block down under pressure against the article being pressed.
The invention relates, further,to vario us details and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section.`
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a block or board which is used for packing sauerkraut or other material within a barrel or receptacle, and rising centrallyfrom said block or plate is a hollow tube .B, which has opposite longitudinal slots B' therein. Loosely held over said central tube is a block C, and fastened to the upper face of the block is a nger-engagingiron or handle D, made of a single piece of iron and bent to form loops in which the fingers are adapted to engage. This iron passes through the slot in said tube and Serial No. 73,735. (No model.)
is held fastened at its end to the upper face l of the block C. Interposed between the upper central portion of said finger iron or handle and the cross-piece E of said tube is a spring F, that serves to normally hold said block C against the upper face of the board or packing-block A.
Hinged to the upper face of the block C at suitable locations are pluralities of arms H, the ends of which are spiked and adapted to engage the inner circumference of a barrel or other receptacle. The inner ends of said arms H are beveled, as at H', so that as the block C,carrying said arms, is raised the outer ends of the arms H will be drawn away from the inner circumference of a barrel, and the outer ends of the arms will be held when the block Gis at its upper limit adjacent to the edge of the plate or block A. In order to hold the block C in its elevated position and also the arms H withdrawn, offsets K are formed, one in each longitudinal edge of a slot in said tube, whereby as the handle is raised to its highest limit it maybe swung in said offsets by a partial rotary movement imparted to same. To throw the arms out when the same are withdrawn, the handleis turned out of the recesses or notches and a spring in the tube will force the block C downward and the points at the ends of the arms into the inner circumference of a barrel or other receptacle.
At locations about the plate or block A adjacent to its marginal edge are the guideloops M, which guide the arms as they work longitudinally through said loops.
It will be observed that by the employment of a device, as described, comprising my invention the plate A may be effectually held within a barrel or other receptacle, and the contents underneath the plate A may be held depressed by said plate and said plate easily removed'without the necessity of a persons hands coming in contact with lthe plate. When it is desired to remove or place the plate within a barrel, the hand of the operator may grasp the cross-piece at the top of the tube and two fingers of the operator may be engaged in the loops of the handle and the block C easily raised, and when block is lowered the spurs or spikes at the ends of the arms will securely engage the wall of the barrel and held the block down.
ICO
a loosely-mounted block over said tube, a'
handle fastened to said block and passing through slots in said tube, arms pivoted to the block and having spurs at their ends, as set forth.
3. In combination with the packing plate or board, a central hollow tube having diametrically opposite longitudinal slots therein, a block loosely mounted about said tube, a handle-iron bent to form loops passing through said slots and fastened at their ends to said loosely-mounted block, the arms hinged to the loosely-mounted block and having spikes at their ends, as set forth.
et. In combination with a packing plate or board, a central tube fastened thereto and having longitudinal slots diametrically opposite each other with an offset in each slot near its upper end, a block loosely mounted 0n said tube, a handle-iron comprising a bar bent to form loops in which the fingers of the operator are adapted to engage, said handleiron passing through said slots, and fastened at its ends to the loosely-mounted block, and a cross-piece fastened to the upper end of said tube, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IRAM` I. NEWFIELD.
