PETER PFEIFR, OF DURHAMVILLE,y NEV YORK.
cANcELlN e-STAMP.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No.V 293,510, dated February 1,2, 1884.
` Application filed September 1l, 1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, PETER PFEIFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durham ville, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful' `Improvements in Canceling-Stamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in canceling and postmarking ,and dating devices for use upon postal and other stamps. The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and durable device which will mutilate, permanently deface, and cancel stamps upon which it is used, the degree of mutilation being determined or regulated by a set-sc"rew which determines the depth toA which the mutilating teeth shall enter the stamp or `other surface to be defaced.
Figure 1 isa side elevation of my improved canceling and post-marking device. Fig. 2 is avertieal sectional view. Fig. 3 is an edge view, and Fig. 4 is an end or bottom view.
Referring to the drawings, A is a tube, serving as the body or handle of the device, in which is secured the flexible bar B, the upper end of said bar being screw threaded and adapted to pass through the cap C, to receive the thumb-nut D, by which the bar B is adjusted within the tube A. The bottomof the tubeA is closed with a cap or sleeve, E, secured thereon bya screw, a, the face of cap E being provided with apertures b b b, which receive the serrated feet or prongs of t-he bar B, as will more fully appear. The filling pieces or face F of the cap E are serrated in a reverse direction from the serrations on the prongs of the bar B, and by which the paper or stamp is'held while the serrations lon the prongs of the bar are cutting or'defacing the stamp or other surface.
G is a sleeve which encircles the tube or handle A, and is held in an elevated position by the spring H. Inlay, however, use a spiral spring in lieu of the spring shown. The lower end of the sleeve G is provided with a projecting flange, I, to the Linder side of which is secured a bar or lug, L, which projects through a slot, c, in the tube A, so as to come in contact with the bend or inclined portion d of the bar when the sleeve G is pushed downward on the tube A. The lower portion of the bar B is bent at right angles and divided into three or more feet or prongs, c e e, which are serrated on the lower edge, the serrations extendingin a reverse direction from the serrations on the face of the cap E, and when thrust forward by and cap O, so that a thin skin of the stamp can be removed without injuring or cutting the envelope or the contents of the same.
which has elasticity enough to bring the. feet or prongs c e into the proper working position the arm or lug L coming in contact with the The bar B is made of steel or other suitable materialv when the lug or arm L is not in contact with the incline d. The flange I on the lower portion ofthe sleeve G serves as a guard to prevent the hand of the operator from slipping down.
M is a short section of tubing secured to the cap E by brazing, or in any suitable manner, in which the post-mark and date type are placed, and when the device is placed on the inkingpad the serrated prongs, as well as the type, will be inked, and in the process of mutilation .the serrations on the prongs e will deposit ink on the stamp, and thus make the cancellation of the stamp more complete.
It will be noticed that the nut D extends through the cap C, and has a bushing, f, secured thereto, which prevents the bar B from beingforcedupwardin the cancelingoperation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Bateut, is
1. In' a stampeanceler, the tubular handle having apertures in its base, combined with a swinging bar suspended in said handle,` and having serrated feet or prongs working in the apertures, substantially as described.
2. The tubular handle having an apertured base, combined with a swinging bar suspended from the upper part of the handle, and having serratedfeet or prongs working through th e ap ertures in the base, substantially as described.
3. The tubular handle having an apertured B and push the lower end of said bar forward IOO from the upper part of the handle, and having serrated feet or prongsy Working through the apertures in the base, and the sliding sleeve operating to swing said bar, substantially as described.
4. rlhe swinging bar suspended from the upper end ofthe tubularvhand-le, having serrated feet or prongs at its lower end, and an intermediate bend or incline, in combination with said handle, and its sliding sleeve having a lug operating on said incline7 substantially as described.
5. The swinging bar adjustable at the upper end of the tubular handle, and having serrated feet or prongs at its lower end, in combination with said handle having apertures in its base
