PAPER-DISPENSING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13,1916.
To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, AnoLPH RYD UIST, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Paperlocked by a manual operation to permit a limited amount of paper to be drawn from .the machine until the feeding roll is automatically relocked, and it has for its object to provide a novel and simple arrangement of parts for accomplishing this end.
A further object of my invention is the arrangement of improved means for preventing reverse movement of the feeding roll, which often results in clogging the machine.
Another object is to provide novel paper engaging devices operating 1n conjunction with the paper feeding roll, so as to pick up the paper and guide it properly to the binations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed. out in the claims at the end of the specification.

S1m1lar reference numerals throughout the several figures indicate the same parts. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the parts are housed within a casing comprlsmg a base 1 to which is secured the slotted side walls 2 arranged to receive the ends 3 of a paper holding roll 4. The casing is closed by a suitable cover 5 pivotally connected to the side walls 2, and adapted to be held 1n engagement with the base 1 by locking means that I will describe hereinafter. The paper, arranged on the paper holding roll 4, is engaged and fed by means of a paper feeding roll which includes the rotary sleeve 6 carrying the roll sections 7, the peripheries 8 of which preferably comprise sand paper or other suitable rough material. Fixed on the sleeve 6 is a gear wheel 9 from the side of which extends an abutment 10, for a purpose to be mentioned presently, said abutment preferably projecting to a point within the adjacent roll section 7, as shown in Fig. 11. The. sleeve 6 rotates on the bearings l1 and 12, respectively, the latter preferably embodying a rotary shaft carrying a hand wheel 13 at its outer end, for a purpose that will'now be described.
Arranged for cooperation with the paper feeding roll are paper engaging devices, which, in the present embodiment comprise a series of metal disks 14 mounted on the tubular shaft 15, and provided with sharpened teeth 16. The disks are arranged at suitable intervals and separated by means of spacing blocks 17, the parts being held in assembled position by means of longitudinal rods 18. The tubular shaft 15 is rotatably supported on bearings 19 carried by the side walls 2 and fixedly mounted on the shaft is a gear wheel 20 which is arranged to engage the aforesaid gear wheel 9 and to obtain movement therefrom.
The paper feeding roll is arranged to be normally locked against movement, and to this end there is provided a locking member, embodying'a cam plate 21 loosely mounted projecting nose 22 the cam plate on the shaft 15 and carrying a forwardly arranged to engage the abutment 10 on the paper feeding roll. Im-
inediately beneath the nose 22 of the cam plate. the latter is provided with a cam surface :23- arranged to be engaged by a releasing member which has a limited movement with relation to the paper feeding roll, and in the present embodiment comprises a disk 21 fixed upon the shaft 12 and having an inwardly extending projection 25 arranged to engage said cam surface 23. Thus, in the operation of the machine, the parts are normally in the position shown in Fig. 9, the cam plate 21 being engaged with the abutment 10 and locking the paper feeding roll against movement. When it is desired to withdraw paper from the machine, the hand wheel 13 is turned sufliciently to move the projection 25 to the position shown in Fig. 10. causing the cam plate 21 to be raised out of engagement with the abutment 10 and permitting the paper feeding roll to move. The paper may then be withdrawn during the revolution of the paper feeding roll and until the abutment 10 again reaches the cam plate 21, whereby further movement is prevented. It will 9 is cut away to permit theprojection 25 to extend therethrough and to have the required movement relatively to the paper feeding roll. 7
The cam plate 21 is provided wlth a series of ratchet teeth 26 which are adapted to engage the notches on the gear wheel 20, sa1d cam plate being held in frictional engagement with the gear wheel, 20 by means of the coiled spring 27 The gear wheel 20 rotates normally in an anti-clockwise direction, and thus tends to move the cam plate into engagement with the abutment 10. If an attempt is made to reverse the movement of the paper feeding roll, it will cause a reverse movement of the gear wheel 20 and of 21 until the latter engages the upwardly extending wall 28 of the casing and thereupon the teeth 26 engage the notches of the gear wheel, and lock the same against further reverse movement. Thus only a veryslight reverse movement 'of the paper feeding roll ispossible, before the parts become securely locked. The upwardly extending wall 28, before-referred to, extends to a point slightly above the center of the shaft 15, and is slotted, as shown, to permit the passage of the toothed disks 14:. This slotted wall forms a most efficient guide for the paper and in conjunction with the toothed disks 14, effectually prevents the paper from clogging within the casing".

The pivoted members 29 are held in engagement with the paper holding roll by means of suitable springs 32 con nected to the members 29 and to the casing, as shown. Thus, as thepaper. is exhausted from the paper holding roll, the members 29 will move downwardly under the action of springs 32 and cause the indicators 31 to move toward the lower ends of the slots 30.
The cover of the casing may be held in engagement with the base in any suitable manner, but I refer to employ the locking means disclosed in the present embodiment, and which comprises aheaded projection I 33 carried by the base 1 and arranged to be engaged by. a spring hasp 34 mounted on the cover 5. The hasp 34 is provided with the opening 35, and with a depression 36 at its outer end, which engages the headed proceive the end of the key, and limit the movement of the latter, as shown in Fig. 5. The key is inserted until it abuts the plate 38, and is then turned, to engage the surface of the hasp and move the same out of locking engagement with the headed projection 33. The key can only be turned a limited dis tance, determined by the flange 38 on the plate 40. This affords an extremely simple and effective lock, which requires the use of a key constructed particularly for the purpose, and can only be opened with considerable difficulty' without anauthorized key.
