PATENT @FFEG.
JOHN T. SHERIDAN, OF BOWLING GREEN, MISSOURI. v
TOILET-PAPER HOLDER.
Application filed August 5, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. SHERIDAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bowling Green, in the county of Pike and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Paper Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to holders for toilet paper in rolls, and among the objects thereof are the provision of a holder from which a desired amount of the paper may be withdrawn at will, which positively prevents waste of the paper, which allows instant substitution of a new roll of paper for an exhausted one, which provides a simple though efficient lock to prevent unauthorized access to the paper roll, which is very simple in construction and operation, which may be made very ornamental, and which is comparatively inexpensive, and, further, to provide means whereby there is no likelihood of the paper being withdrawn back into the holder whereby none could be drawn therefrom.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which like characters refer to like parts in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through a holder constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, no paper being shown; said view being partly broken away to show structural details; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the back of the holder, showing a portion of a simple lock which I employ.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a back plate having forwardly directed arms 5 thereon of spring material for a shaft 6 adapted to receive the roll 7 of paper the free end of which is shown at 8, the shaft 6 being readily removable from said arms by merely springing the latter apartto permit the substitution of a new roll of paper.
Hinged at 9 is a shield 10 having a slot 11 in the bottom thereof between its lower edge and the back plate and entirely across the width of said shield or approximately so,
Specification of Letters Patent.

to permit the outward passage of the free end 8 of the paper, and said shield carries a shaft 12 above the slot 11 for friction rolls 13 adapted to bear on the paper and force the same against a bearing plate 1 suspended from a rod 15 carried by the back plate. said bearing plate being yielclingly held in place against the inner side of the paper by means of springs 16 and, preferably, projects through the slot 11.
The shaft 12 is provided with a ratchet wheel 17 at its inner end engaged by a pawl 18 to prevent shaft rotation in a direction other than that of the outward paper move ment, and said shaft carries a button 19 outside of the shield for manually rotating said shaft to feed the paper forwardly outwardly of the holder.
The back plate carries a rotatable shaft 20 having an angular outer end 21 for engagement by a suitable key and is provided with two dogs 22 secured thereto and normally held in engagement with stops 23 on the innor sides of the shield by means of a spring 24: to prevent unauthorized opening of the holder but permitting instant opening thereof by a person possessed of the proper key.
If desired, the tension of the bearing plate 1 1 against the friction rolls 13 may be such as to compel manual rotation of the latter, or such tension may be lessened to permit the withdrawal of the paper from the holder by grasping the free end 8 of said paper and pulling downwardly, the former being preferable.
My invention is very simple though efficient and is readily installed, screw holes 25 being provided in the back plate for this purpose, and, while I have shown a present preferred embodiment of my invention, I may make changes thereover provided such changes do not depart from the spirit of my invention and come within the scope of the appended claims.
While I have described my holder as de' signed for toilet paper. there is no reason why I may not make the same larger and employ it for dispensing the paper towels at present provided in rolls, and the holder may be used for analogous purposes.
Having fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A toilet paper holder, comprisinga back plate, arms thereon a shaft in detachable engagement with said arms and adapted to receive a roll of paper, a shield hinged to said back plate and slotted at its lower end, a friction roll carried by said shield adjacent said slot, external means for rotating said friction roll, a transverse rod carried by said back plate, a bearing plate hooked at its upper end for detachable connection with said rod, and a spring for holding said bearing plate toward said roll to act as a brake on the withdrawal of said paper.
