Application filed February 27, 1902. Serial No. 95,967. (No model.)
To all whom, it nut/y concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. DUNHAi/na citizen of the United States, residing at Wash ington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Removing Caps from Bottles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- IO pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and .to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices or tools for use in removing metallic caps from bottles; and it has'for its object the provision of a simple, inexpensive, and durable tool of this character designed to be carried upon a keyring, the construction of the tool being such as to adapt it for use without removing it from the ring upon which it is carried, and the keys carried upon the ring being grasped by the hand of the person operating the device 2 5 will serve as a leverage, thus facilitating the operation of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a metallic tool of the charac- 3o ter described .which is adapted for use both as a tool for removing caps from bottles and also as an advertising medium.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the 3 5 novel form of the device, as hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the 40 accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the tool, the same being shown attached to a key-ring and as it appears when in actual use when removing a cap from a bottle, the hand of the operator being indicated in dotted lines. Fig.
2 is a top plan View of the device upon an enlarged scale.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the invention, which consists of a single piece of sheet metal of such thickness as will be found suitable to render it sufficiently strong and durable and to adapt it to withstand the strain which would ordinarily be imparted to it in use.
The device consists, essentially, of a circular portion B, having a central aperture 0, the diameter of which aperture is such as to admit of the passage of the finger of the operator. V
D is a groove of suitable width to adapt it to receive the key-ring when the tool is in use, as will hereinafter appear. It is essential that this groove D should be located at a point adjacent to the lower rear edge of the circular portion of the tool.
The body portion of the device consists of a strong lever portion E, the lower edge of which extends upon a line drawn longitudinally through the tool at a point slightly above the center of the circle described by the pe- 7o riphery of the opening 0, the extreme end of this lever portion E being rounded, as shown at F.
G is a short lever extending from the lower portion of the body of the device upon the are of a circle the circumference of which if extended would pass through the lever E at a point substantially at its longitudinal center.
' From the foregoing description the use of the'device will be readily understood. WVhen it is desired to remove a cap from a bottle, the operator grasps the device between the thumb and forefinger of his hand, allowing the key-ring to drop into the groove D, and grasping the keys contained upon the ring firmlyin the hand. Holding the tool in this position, the lever Gis inserted beneath the edge of the cap to be removed from the bottle, the lever E being extended horizontally across and bearing upon the upper surface of the cap. 0 The grasp of the operator upon the keys will serve to facilitate the upward movement of the tool, which is required in removing the cap from the bottle, as will be readily understood'upon reference to Fig. l of the drawings. 5
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described tool for removing caps from bottles, the same comprising a metallic ring provided at a point adjacent to one of its lower edges upon one side with a groove and upon its opposite side with integral arms adapted to engage the edge and top respectively of a bottle-cap, substantially as shown and described and for the purpose specified.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a device for removing caps from bottles, comprising a metallic plate having a circular aperture with a recess D therein adapted to receive a key-ring, integral arms E and G of unequal length projecting laterally from said circular portion, one of said arms G being dis- :5 posed at an angle to the arm E, as shown and described.
