HAND-SUPPORT FOR USE IN WRITING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,239, dated March 16, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN LOUIS WYCHE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rusk, in the county of Cherokee and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing Devices; and'I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a vertical section.

This invention'is an improved device to rest the hand and give ease and fluency thereto in writing; and it consists, essentially, in a support made of glass, rubber, or similar suitable material, and having very smooth edges to travel without friction over the writing-paper, in combination with a hand-rest pivoted and capable of a certain degree of motion thereon, and having connected to it the handle of the pen.

The invention further consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the support, of glass or other suitable substance, cylindrical in form, and having its lower edge, a, made very smooth, so as to travel easily over the paper. The upper edge, a, is preferably inclined to the lower edge, as shown, and above it is the hand-rest B,which has its upper surface formed to fit the hollow of the hand when the latter is inclined, whileits lower surface is fiat. Depending from the said lower surface is a projection, b, which enters the upper end of the support A, and has in it a vertical slot, 12.

O is a rod which is secured diametrically across the support A near its upper edge, and midway between the highest and lowest point of the same. The rod 0 passes through the slot b, and while holding the hand-rest to the support allows it to have a slight up-and-down motion on the same.

D is a pivot passing through the supportA immediately below the lowest point of the upper edge of the same, and entering the rear end of the projection b of the hand-rest.

By means of the pivot-slot b and axle or rod 0 the hand-rest is permitted to vibrate slightly in a lateral direction upon the upper edge of the support A. t

E is a plate or leaf spring passing through the support Aimmediately below the highest point of its upper edge, and consequently diametrically opposite the pivot D. The inner end of the spring connects to the front end or surface of the projection 12 of the hand-rest, and as the pivot D is made slightly loose in its bearing in said projection the spring holds the front end of the hand-rest slightly elevated above the upper edge of the support A. A. slight pressure of the hand will, however, acting against the spring, depress the said end of the rest down on the upper edge of the support.

F is the pen, and F the penhandle, pivoted, as shown, upon a pin, 6, rising from the front end of the hand-rest, preferably near its outer edge.

The words outer and inner and front and rear in the above refer to the points of the device in relation to the person writing. Thus outer would be away from said person, front would be the end of the device that the thumb and first finger occupy in writing, 81c.

The manner of using the device is as follows: The hand-rest is held in the hollow of the hand with the little finger over the pivot D, and the pen-handle either between the first and second fingers with the thumb upon the front end of the hand-rest or with the thumb passed under said end and holding the penhandle between itself and the first finger. Then in making the letters the whole device is moved in the proper manner, the support sliding easily over the paper and preventing the hand from tiring or becoming cramped.

In shading, the thumb or front end of the hand-rest is depressed against the spring F during the downstrokes, and to vary the inclination of the letters the pen-handle is inclined laterally more or less on its pivot D.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

inclination of its top edge, the pin 6 near the thumb end of the hand-rest, and the pen-ham dle F, pivoted upon the pin e, substantially as specified.

3. The combination of the glass supporting piece A, provided with the smooth edge a and the inclined edge a, the hand-rest B, provided with the projection b on its lower surface, the pivoting-rod O, passing through the slot 6 of said projection, the pivot D, the spring E, the pin e, and the pen-handle F, pivoted on said pin, substantially as specified.
