Be it known that I, CHARLES HENRY Sonor- BACK, ot Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inAttaching Buttons or Studs and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Y This invention relates to a novel form of attaching button or stud which is adapted to be attached to an article of Wearing=apparel, such as a corset, and is constructed for attachment thereto-of other articles of wearing-apparel and also to support t-he .usual or any preferred form' of hose-supporter.

The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out inthe appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure lis a fragmentary View of the front part of a corset, showing my attaching button or stud applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross-section'of an eyelet used with said stud or button and adapted to be secured in the article of apparel to be attached to said corset. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a similar Section of a modified form of attaching device.

As shown in said drawings, A A designate buttons or studs adapted to be secured to a front of a corset, near the lower edge thereof, and one on each side of the corset, and B designates an eyelet which is adapted to be secured to the article of apparel which is to be fastened to the corset and which is constructed-to be slipped over said stud'or button. Said stud is shown in Figs. l and 3 as made expansible, so as to hold said eyelet with yielding engagement, in which event the eyelet may be made iuextensible. Obviously the same result will be secured by a reversal of this arrangement-that is to say, a solid head or button and an elastic or expansible eyelet. Said eyelet is shown as formed by a short rigid tube b, which passes through and is secured permanently to the body of the fabric B with which it is used and is closed at its 5o outer end by a head b', between which and a lwhich it is made.

The button or stud A is attached to the body of the fabric of the corset by means of -a shank A', which passes therethrough, and 5 5 the inner end of said shank is engagedy by a WasherA2, over which said shank is clenched,

The head A3 of said stud or button may be made of sheet metal and provided with slits a, which render the same 6o expansible and contractible, whereby it may be inserted into thefeyelet and held therein by the action of the spring of the metal of In Fig. l are shown two buttons attached to the corset,one on each side and near the bottom margin thereof. Said buttons are located to support an abdominal band-such, for instance, as that shown in my prior application for United States Letters Patent, No. 725,953, filed August 3, 1899. 7o However, in case of the use of ther studsin connection with other garments they will be located upon the corset in a manner most suity able in each particular instance.

In addition to the use above set forth of the stud .or button I provide means for detachably suspending a hose-supporter from the attaching device. In Figs. l and 2, C designates an elastic hose-supporter of usual form provided with a slotted plate C. D desig- 8o nates a double ianged washer which is mounted'on the shank A of the button or stud A and between the iange a on said shank and the outer face of the body of the fabric. Said washer is provided between its anges with a 8 5 somewhat deep peripheral groove, Within f v which the slotted plate of the supporter is inserted when it is slipped over the shank A. The slot in said plate is enlarged'to permit they same to pass over the flange a of said button 9o or stud. f

In Fig. 4c is shown a modified form of` the attaching button or stud which is adapted for attaching a garment-such, for instance, as

an underskirt-to and suspendingit from the 9 5l corset. As shown in said figure, the part which corresponds with the headA3 of the previously-described figure has the form of a disk E attached to the outer end of a rigid neck E', which head or disk is larger in diameter zoo than the rst-described head and forms a button of ordinary size. The other parts of the attaching device are like that heretofore described and are designated by the same reference-letters. The grooved washer D is located on the shank A inside of said head between the liange a' and the body of the corset and is adapted for engagement by the plate of the hose-supporter. Said supporter is attached thereto before the garment supported thereby is attached in place. It will be understood that when a garment like an underskirt is to be supported from the corset any desired number of buttons of any preferred construction may be employed which will be spaced at suitable intervals around the corsetand that the set of buttons will include on'e or more buttons or studs like that shown in Fig. 4, which latter will be located on the corset in suitable positions for engagement therewith of the upper ends of the hose-supporters.

The construction of the stud or button which affords engagement therewith of the hose-supporter, as well as of a garment, is of much practical importance, as it avoids the necessity of providing other fastening devices for this purpose and also insures the proper engagement of said supporters with the corset so long as the garment or band, as the case may be, remains properly attached, it being obvious that the supporter being engaged with the shank of the button or stud so long as the garment or band is engaged therewith said supporter cannot become accidentally de tached from the shank While the garment is in place.

I claim as my inventionl. An attaching device comprising a shank .having at its outer end a head and inside ot' ment, and a peripherally-grooved washer on.

the shank between the said ange and the attaching means, said grooved Washer being available for receiving a hose-supporter or the like when an article of apparel is engaged with the head.

2. An attaching device comprising a head, a shank attached thereto, a clamping-washer engaging the inner end of the shank, and a peripherally-grooved washer on said shank between said clamping-washer and head and located entirely inside of that part which is adapted to be engaged by a garment which may be attached to the device.

3. The combination with an attaching device comprising an expansible and contractible head, a shank connected with said head and a peripherally-grooved washer on said shank, of an eyelet adapted for connection with the garment to be supported and adapted to be slipped over and held in yielding engagement with said expansible and contractible head.
